Introduction to ABST3035 – Indigenous Queer Theory & Practice

The unit ABST3035, Indigenous Queer Theory & Practice, is offered by Macquarie University. This unit introduces students to theories and practices for the analysis of race, gender, and settler colonialism, engaging with Black queer feminism, queer critiques, and Indigenous methodologies.

  • Unit description: This unit teaches strategies and legacies of resistance, emphasizing the complexity and productivity of coalition and solidarity between Indigenous and Black, immigrant and refugee, and queer and transgender activists globally.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:


  • Critically identify Indigenous peoples' historical and contemporary contributions to knowledge relating to gender and sexuality.
  • Use a diverse range of texts to inform their understanding of Indigeneity, gender, and sexuality.
  • Apply appropriate theoretical frameworks to facilitate an understanding of Indigenous Queer peoples.
  • Communicate effectively, in a range of written and spoken formats, within the conventions of the discipline of Indigenous Studies.
  • Identify the potential and limitations of multidisciplinary approaches to understanding Indigenous Queer peoples.

General Assessment Information

  • Late Penalty: A 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of 0 (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted.
  • Terminology protocols for Indigenous Studies: Students must use appropriate terminology when referring to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

  • Analysis Task based on readings: 30%, Due: 17 August 2025
  • Minor Essay: 30%, Due: 6 October 2025
  • Major Essay: 40%, Due: 9 November 2025

Analysis Task based on readings

  • Assessment Type: Qualitative analysis task
  • Indicative Time on Task: 20 hours
  • Weighting: 30%
  • Students will be required to respond to readings with short form analysis.

Minor Essay

  • Assessment Type: Essay
  • Indicative Time on Task: 20 hours
  • Weighting: 30%
  • Students will analyse the impact of one or more queer Indigenous public figures.

Major Essay

  • Assessment Type: Essay
  • Indicative Time on Task: 40 hours
  • Weighting: 40%
  • Students will write a 2500-word essay responding to one or more of the weekly topics.
