Introduction to the Biomedical Informatics Program
The Biomedical Informatics Program is designed for individuals interested in designing and implementing quantitative and computational methods to solve challenging problems across the entire spectrum of biology and medicine. The program aims to develop the skills required for a range of exciting careers in medicine, research and development, or industry.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the Masters of Biomedical Informatics (MBI) and Graduate Diploma in Biomedical Informatics (GDBI) programs, applicants must:
- Hold a minimum of a BSc (Honours) degree in biology, life sciences, biochemistry, medical sciences, computer science, biostatistics, engineering, and related disciplines
- Be interested in designing and implementing quantitative and computational methods that solve challenging problems across the entire spectrum of biology and medicine
- Wish to develop the skills required for a range of exciting careers in medicine, research and development, or industry
- Have a minimum acceptable average of B+ in the third and fourth years of their undergraduate program (all courses considered)
- Submit English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) scores if their first language is not English
Eligibility for Professional Degree Holders
Applicants with professional degrees in nursing, medicine, and pharmacy are encouraged to apply.
Application Assessment
Applications are reviewed by an Admissions Committee, which recommends selected applicants to the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs. The assessment criteria include:
- Academic background as the most important criterion
- Academic references from instructors of undergraduate studies
- Other information such as work experience or volunteer activities as supporting documents
Program Structure
The diploma portion of the program is taught in the summer (May-August) as four sequential courses, each taught in an interactive, hands-on manner with an intense load. The elective courses and the project for the MBI are covered in the following Fall and Winter terms.
Course Delivery
The program, including all courses offered within it, is in-person only.
Tuition and Fees
The tuition and fees for the programs are:
- GDBI program: approximately $9,467 for domestic students and $26,000 for international students
- MBI program (which includes the cost of GDBI): approximately $20,500 ($9,467 Summer, $5,400 Fall, and $5,400 Winter) for domestic students and $55,000 for international students Note: These amounts are subject to change.
Supervisors and Projects
Applicants do not need to find supervisors before submitting an application. They will have the opportunity to read about potential projects and supervisors during the diploma portion of the program and can then select a project for the Fall.
