Introduction to the Master's Program in Expertise in Gerontology
The Master's program in Expertise in Gerontology is designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge of aging and older adults, particularly in the areas of health and the medico-social system. The program is offered by the Faculty of Health at Sorbonne Université.
Objectives
The objective of the program is to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to intervene effectively in the field of gerontology. The program focuses on four distinct themes:
- Thématique Formation Recherche
- Habitat and Aménagement de l'Espace for Older Adults
- Encadrement de Structures Médico-Sociales
- Médecine Gériatrique
Organization
The program is taught over one academic year and includes a theoretical component of approximately 300 hours, a seven-week minimum internship in a gerontological setting, and a final thesis. The teaching takes place in the Salle d'Enseignement Laroque, Hôpital Charles Foix, Ivry-sur-Seine.
Competencies
The program aims to develop the following competencies in students:
- Understand the challenges of population aging and the issues related to the medico-social field and older adults
- Acquire a culture of university and clinical research
- Ability to transmit gerontological knowledge to the people they supervise
- Ability to coordinate a multi-professional team of gerontology interveners
- Conduct a gerontological assessment of a fragile older adult and propose a personalized assistance plan
- Conduct an investigation responding to a gerontological field problem or a research work
- Lead a training action in gerontology
- Acquire expertise and social engineering capabilities in gerontology
Validation of Teaching
Each course includes 9 compulsory units and 1 unit chosen by the student. The course is personalized at the beginning of the academic year with the student by the head of the Master's program. The Master's program can be spread over two academic years for professionals who wish to do so. Each teaching unit is subject to specific validation and gives rise to the acquisition of European credits (ECTS). The same applies to the internship and the thesis (30 ECTS). The Master's degree is obtained after acquiring 60 ECTS.
Prerequisites
To follow the Master's program in Expertise in Gerontology, it is recommended to have received basic training in gerontology. However, to allow all students to follow the teaching, an introduction to gerontology module is organized at the beginning of the academic year.

The program is designed for professionals in the health or medico-social sector who hold a Master's degree or equivalent (subject to a validation of prior experience).

Continuing Education
The program distinguishes between initial training and continuing education. Initial training applies to candidates who have not interrupted their studies and can justify enrollment in initial training in the previous year. Continuing education applies to candidates who have interrupted their studies for more than two years. The tuition fees for continuing education are as follows:
- Individual continuing education: 3,000
- Company-sponsored continuing education: 7,000
- University registration fees: 254 (subject to change)
