Masters Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies

The Masters degree in Peace and Conflict Studies is a postgraduate program that requires students to meet specific admission criteria and complete a series of courses and requirements to obtain the degree.


Admission Criteria

To be eligible for the program, students must:


  • Have obtained a bachelor's degree with a grade of "Good" or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Advance to the determined level of English language proficiency according to the Faculty Council decree before enrollment.
  • Submit an application form in August of each year, and the faculty council will make a decision regarding the application upon a proposal from the related department board.

Conditions to Obtain the Degree

To obtain the degree, students must:


  • Follow the study system and successfully complete ten courses with an accumulative grade of C+ at least.
  • Achieve an average grade of CGPA of at least C+ or submit a thesis on a subject approved by the Faculty Board.

Study Hours for the Program

The program consists of 45 credit hours, divided into:


  • 4 international compulsory courses with a total of 12 credit hours.
  • 3 local elective courses with a total of 9 credit hours.
  • 3 local elective courses with a total of 9 credit hours.
  • A workshop with a total of 3 credit hours.
  • Registration and preparation for the thesis with a total of 12 credit hours.

Course Evaluation Rules

Courses are evaluated according to the conditions contained in Article (7) of the regulation of graduate studies with credit hours system in the Faculty of Commerce, Alexandria University.


Course Structure

The program is structured as follows:


First Semester

  • Introduction to Peace and Conflict Studies (3 credit hours)
  • Conflict resolution practices (3 credit hours)
  • Culture and Peace (3 credit hours)
  • Research methods in Peace and Conflict Studies (3 credit hours)

Second Semester

  • Regional Conflict Management (3 credit hours)
  • Historical contexts for regional disputes (3 credit hours)
  • Regional disputes Geopolitics (3 credit hours)
  • The role of international and regional organizations in disputes settlement (3 credit hours)
  • Mechanisms of proper settlement for regional disputes (3 credit hours)
  • Globalization and its dimensions on the Arab region (3 credit hours)

Third Semester

  • Egyptian national security (1 credit hour)
  • Egyptian Foreign Policy (2 credit hours)
  • Characteristics of Egyptian culture in the context of cultures dialogue (3 credit hours)
  • The legal status of domestic and international rivers in Egypt (4 credit hours)
  • Sustainable Development in Egypt (5 credit hours)

Fourth Semester

  • Workshop (3 credit hours)
  • Thesis registration and preparation (12 credit hours)

Thesis Preparation and Defense

  • In the beginning of the fourth semester, the department chooses a scientific supervisor for each student to supervise the preparation of the research plan and the thesis.
  • Students prepare a thesis on a subject approved by the Faculty Council, with the possibility of an extension of one semester.
  • Students must pass a public oral test in their thesis subject in front of a committee formed by the Faculty Council.
