University Program: Photography
The university program in Photography is a comprehensive course that covers the fundamentals of photography, from introduction to advanced special effects. The program is divided into several sessions, each focusing on a specific aspect of photography.
Basic Photography
The basic photography sessions introduce students to the world of photography, covering topics such as:
- Elements of design and their application in photography
- Rights and wrongs of photography
- Question and answer sessions
- Sharing experiences and thoughts
- Exploring imagination and developing a photographer's eye
- Discussion on stock images and assignments
- Regular class talks on experiences and student know-how on lighting and composition
The sessions are designed to create an understanding between the teacher and students, verbally and mentally. Students are provided with little assignments as homework, such as camera shake practice, to experiment and determine their creative skills.
Session 2: Manual Function of SLR Cameras
In this session, students learn about the manual function of today's SLR cameras, including:
- How to hold a camera properly
- Camera functions in detail
- Study of Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, Depth of Field, Lenses, and related terms
- Know-how on compositions
- Fun class assignment on taking pictures, focusing on compositions and lighting
- Homework on lighting and composition, with students required to submit 5 pictures each
Session 3: Review and Discussion
This session involves a review of every student's project, with questions and answers on the study of Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, Depth of Field, lenses, and related terms. The session also covers:
- Underexposed and overexposed photography
- Discussion on photography from magazine ads
Session 4: Outdoor Class Group Assignment
In this session, students participate in an outdoor class group assignment using digitally manual cameras, with the purpose of playing with aperture and shutter speed. The session includes:
- Intentionally taking wrong readings and seeing the results
- Presenting outdoor shoots on a projector for each student
- Class discussion on all pictures, with feedback on how to improve
Intermediate Level
The intermediate level sessions introduce students to more advanced topics, including:
- Introduction to Lighting
- Students are asked to think of a theme based on lighting and composition
- Discussion on different themes, with students allowed to speak on topics or issues they want to make people aware of
- Introduction to Color Theory
- Introduction to Adobe Photoshop
Session 1: Introduction to Lighting
This session focuses on lighting, with students required to think of a theme based on lighting and composition. The session includes:
- Discussion on different themes
- Students are motivated to think creatively
- Fun assignment: creating a photographic Visual Diary, with comments, thoughts, sketches, and pictures
Session 2: Final Topics and Discussion
In this session, students discuss and decide on final topics, with a concept to be handed over to the teacher. The session includes:
- Discussion on pictures taken by students individually related to the project
- Learning and experimentation on Depth of Field
- Discussion on studio lights, flash, shooting table, and reflector
- Continuation on Adobe Photoshop
Session 3: Complete Learning of Adobe Photoshop
This session involves a complete learning of Adobe Photoshop, with respect to Design and Photography. The session includes:
- Questions and Answers related to the project and software
- Note: Students will learn full Professional Editing lessons, including Backgrounds, Abstract Merging, Macro Photography, Detailing, skin tone Editing, Special Effects, and more
Session 4: Final Enlargements and Exhibition
In this final session, students learn how to mount pictures professionally and display their work. The session includes:
- Final enlargements with portfolios and check on visual diary
- An exhibition will be organized where students will display their work in their own way
- Student will present their work, which will be judged by a jury
- Introduction to Special Effects
Special Effect Photography
The special effect photography sessions teach students at least 6 advanced special effects, including:
- Star Trekking
- Zooming
- Panning
- Silhouette
- Bulb
- Multiple Exposure A detailed portfolio will be made by the students, which will be exhibited. The special effects are designed to make the viewer stop and think about how the photograph was shot. The students will expert in the correct handling and manipulation of the camera.
