نظرة عامة على البرنامج

The Program

The program features over ten events that combine arts and social sciences, including four events with artist participation aimed at enriching the dialogue between gallery artists, faculty members, and students at New York University's campuses in Abu Dhabi and New York.

Film Screening and Discussion: Mother of Fire

A screening of the film "Mother of Fire" by Farah Al Qasimi, followed by a discussion with the artist and Giya Makondo-Wills at 19 Washington Square North, New York University, New York.

Social Science Conversations: Elevating Theory

A series of conversations about what it means to engage with theory in the context of academic research in the Gulf region. This series, hosted by the Haraka Experimental Lab, features five ethnographic projects on the United Arab Emirates, covering topics such as work, temporariness, belonging, authenticity, and movement.

Participants

  • John O'Brien, Associate Professor of Social Research and Public Policy
  • Loura Al Asaf, Assistant Professor of Arab Crossroads Studies and Anthropology
  • Rana Al Muttawa, Assistant Professor and Emerging Research Fellow in Social Research and Public Policy
  • May Al Dabbagh, Assistant Professor in Social Research and Public Policy
  • Nidi Mahajan, Visiting Fellow at the Institute for International Asian Studies in collaboration with the African Studies Center

Student Seminar: What We Should Learn (and Forget)

A student seminar responding to the themes of Alaa Edris's video work "School," analyzing questions surrounding concepts of power, positioning, and underlying processes within educational institutions.

Artist Conversation: Returning to Planning

An artist conversation series where the artist interacts with four academics about their ongoing work, "Vido." These conversations take place outside the traditional context of artist talks, highlighting the importance of the process itself within the artistic and academic context.

Artist Conversation: And the Events Unfolded like a Storm

A conversation with artist Alaa Younis about the production process of her work "Ajman Private Studios: Food Supply" for the Sharbaka exhibition.

Exhibition Performance: Sharbaka Workshop

A workshop where participants are invited to perform the exhibition by learning how to make music through a "Sharbaka" clapping workshop. This workshop, led by Ghazi Al-Mulaifi, NYU Abu Dhabi, embodies the ideas of harmony and entanglement, offering a campus-level experience in the physical transmission of knowledge.
