Introduction to NYU Wagner Programs

New York University's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service offers a range of programs designed to educate and prepare students for careers in public service. The school is committed to maintaining an environment that encourages respect for individual values and appropriate conduct among all persons.

Capstone Program

The Capstone program is a unique learning opportunity at NYU Wagner. Over the course of one academic year, students work in teams with faculty oversight to identify opportunities for a client organization or to conduct research on a pressing social question. The course is designed in a weekly structure to facilitate reflection and learning in class, where students collaborate with teammates, other classmates, and their faculty member.

What You'll Learn

Regardless of program or specialization, all students share the same learning goals for Capstone:

  • How to design and execute an extended project for a client organization
  • How to successfully work with a client and relevant stakeholders
  • How to function as a member of a consulting team working for a client
  • How to conduct and present effective applied research

What Capstone Is Not

Capstone is not:

  • An internship
  • About getting on a project for an organization you want to work for after graduation
  • Necessarily tailored to your primary area of interest, but it is a chance to gain useful experience informative to your career

Option: "Data and Policy" Capstone

In Fall 2025, Wagner will be piloting a new Data and Policy Capstone option, open to MPA-PNP students in the Policy specialization. To be eligible, students must have completed the following courses with a grade of A- or better:

  • Multiple Regression and Introduction to Econometrics (PADM-GP 2902)
  • Evaluating Programs and Policies (PADM-GP 2171) The course Advanced Empirical Methods (PADM-GP 2172) is recommended to be taken concurrently with Capstone in the Fall term.
