Pathology Residency Program
The Pathology Residency Program at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine is designed to produce pathologists who are knowledgeable and experienced in all aspects of pathology, with a superior commitment to lifelong learning and excellent patient care.
Program Overview
The program, established in 1951, has 9 residents and 23 pathologists, and is led by Mark Friedman, DO, program director. The residency stands out as a small, supportive, and tightly knit group, with residents well regarded and consistently accepted into top competitive fellowship programs across the country.
Curriculum
The curriculum is structured around two specialized residency tracks:
- Anatomic pathology and clinical pathology four-year track
- Anatomic pathology three-year track
Residents gain hands-on experience during rotations in diagnostic surgical and autopsy pathology and laboratory medicine, complemented by comprehensive didactic and translational research training.
Pathology Residency Mission
The mission of the program is to educate and train residents through comprehensive and diverse clinical, laboratory, and research opportunities, didactics, and service work, preparing them to function independently as diagnosticians, laboratory directors, and leaders in the field of pathology.
The program aims to provide:
- Robust training in anatomic and clinical pathology, in both basic and subspecialty fields, with graduated responsibility and preparation for independent practice
- Leadership skills that enable those who complete the program to stand out as competitive candidates for careers in academic or community practice settings
- A supportive and nurturing work environment that allows residents to reach their full potential, while maintaining a sustainable worklife balance
Admission Criteria
Applicants must have passed Step 1 of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and intend to take or have passed Step 2 of the USMLE. Resident Selection
The program accepts two to three residents each year, and selected candidates are contacted via email for an interview.
