MS in Biomedical Informatics Admissions

The Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences accepts applications for the MS in Biomedical Informatics program each fall. The application for the 2025–26 academic year is now open.

Program Overview

The MS curriculum provides a strong foundation in biomedical informatics, with coursework, hands-on skills labs, and opportunities for applied learning. Students complete the program in 12 months of full-time study, with the option to request part-time enrollment.

Admissions Timeline

• Application opens: October 1, 2025
• Virtual Open House: November 5, 2025, at 12:00 noon EST
• In-Person Open House: December 4, 2025, 5:30 PM-7:00 PM
• Early Application deadline: January 31, 2026, at 5:00 PM EST
• Admissions decisions: Rolling
• Late Application deadline: April 1, 2026
• Final Admissions decisions: Mid-April 2026
• Program start date: Early July 2025 (introductory summer session), followed by fall, spring, and summer semesters

Admissions Overview

Successful applicants typically hold a bachelor's degree from a recognized institution in a computational or quantitative science (such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, or engineering) or in a basic science (such as biology, physics, or genetics). A programming background is not required—students will learn computational and quantitative methods as part of the curriculum.

Applicants often come from diverse fields, including medicine, engineering, biology, and business. An advanced degree in medicine or health (e.g., MD, or master's in dentistry, public health, epidemiology, or clinical genetics) may strengthen an application. Prior experience in biomedical informatics is helpful but not required.

The minimum GPA required is 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). GRE scores are not required but can be submitted. Applicants are welcome to include code samples to highlight technical experience.

Evaluation is based on:

• Academic achievement
• 2 Letters of recommendation (up to 3 letters can be submitted)
• Personal statement and career goals
• Relevant research, coding, or professional experience
• Demonstrated English proficiency (if applicable)

Required Exams

Applicants whose education was not conducted in English must provide proof of English proficiency:

• TOEFL: Submit scores to NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science (institution code 2596, department code 45)
• IELTS: Submit scores electronically to "NYU Vilcek Institute of Grad Biomed Studies"
• Duolingo scores are not accepted

Applicants with English-language scientific publications may be considered for proficiency without additional testing.

Applications are only reviewed once all materials are submitted through the application portal.

International Applicants

The institute welcomes applicants from around the world. All candidates are reviewed using the same criteria. If the GPA is not reported on a 4.0 scale, an official evaluation converting the grades is required. Recommended evaluation services include World Education Services, Educational Credential Evaluators, and SpanTran.

Housing

NYU does not provide housing for master's students. Independent housing arrangements are recommended prior to arrival, and off-campus options should be explored.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition is billed per credit by NYU's Graduate School of Arts and Science. The program requires 34 credits, with most students enrolling in 12 credits per semester.
