Introduction to NYU's Film & Television Major

The NYU Film & Television major offers a flexible, hands-on curriculum where students can explore diverse aspects of filmmaking. From animation to television, screenwriting to editing, or directing to producing, the program provides a comprehensive education in the field.

Creating from Day One

The NYU Film & TV curriculum is designed to ensure students have access to learning all the creative fundamentals. This ranges from pre-production to working on set, to editing on industry-standard platforms. An incoming student's coursework will be broken up into two semesters:

  • Visual Semester: Highlights filmmaking and storytelling fundamentals, using camera, lighting, and video equipment for self-directed projects. This semester also immerses students in History & Criticism and Colloquium classes.
  • Audio Semester: Emphasizes how storytelling isn't solely a visual medium through the production class: Sound Image. While learning sound fundamentals, students are also involved in performance, directing, and screenwriting classes.

Core Production Classes

Core production classes are the gateway to hands-on filmmaking and the foundation for discovering the kind of stories students are passionate about telling. From day one, students are immersed in the creative process, gaining practical experience with industry-standard equipment, finding community with classmates, and learning to bring their artistic vision to life.

Concentrations and Craft Classes

After completing first-year production classes, students can take specialized Film & Television classes that align with their interests. These areas include:

  • Directing: How to direct camera and actors
  • Screenwriting: Storytelling strategies, writing for TV, research, and writing the documentary
  • Producing: Marketing & distribution, budgeting, and film financing
  • Cinematography/Camera: Camera science and camera techniques
  • Editing: AVID certification course progression
  • Sound: Studio recording and sound mixing
  • Design: Art and producing design and makeup for film
  • Animation: Stop motion, illustration, storyboarding

Program Structure

The program is structured to allow students to explore different pathways and concentrations. After the first year, students can transition into fundamental, intermediate, and advanced production courses, which complement other major requirements at NYU, including general education, elective classes, and craft classes.

Conclusion

The NYU Film & TV program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in filmmaking, allowing them to explore diverse aspects of the field and develop their unique storytelling voices. With its flexible, hands-on curriculum and specialized classes, the program offers students the opportunity to create and tell their stories through various forms of creative expression.
