Introduction to the Classics (MA) Program

The Department of Classics at New York University offers a Master of Arts program in Classics, providing students with a comprehensive education in Greek and Latin literature, history, archaeology, and ancient philosophy.


Program Description

The Classics (MA) program is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the classical world and its cultures. The program is 32 credits, chosen from the 1000-2000 series of courses, including either the Latin survey sequence or the Greek survey sequence, and one course from two of the following three areas: Prose Composition, Greek or Roman History, and Archaeology or Ancient Art History. Of the remaining four courses, at least three must be in Greek or Latin authors.


Admissions

All applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) are required to submit the general application requirements, which include:


  • Academic Transcripts
  • Test Scores (if required)
  • Applicant Statements
  • Résumé or Curriculum Vitae
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • A non-refundable application fee

Program Requirements

The Classics Master of Arts program requires:


  • 32 credits, chosen from the 1000-2000 series of courses
  • Either the Latin survey sequence or the Greek survey sequence
  • One course from two of the following three areas: Prose Composition, Greek or Roman History, and Archaeology or Ancient Art History
  • At least three of the remaining four courses must be in Greek or Latin authors
  • Diagnostic sight translation examinations in Greek and Latin
  • A translation examination in German, French, or Italian

    • Select from the 1000-2000 series of courses, including one of the following sequences:
      • Latin Survey Sequence
        • CLASS-GA 1003: Latin Lit Origins Repub Augustan Movement
        • CLASS-GA 1005: Latin Lit, Imperial Lit
      • Greek Survey Sequence
        • CLASS-GA 1009: Greek Literature
        • CLASS-GA 1013: Greek Literature Survey
  • Select one course from two of the following three areas:
    • Prose Composition
      • CLASS-GA 1011: Greek Rhetoric and Stylistics
      • CLASS-GA 1012: Latin Rhetoric/Stylistic
    • Greek or Roman History
    • Archaeology or Ancient Art History
  • Additional Courses:
    • Of the remaining four courses, at least three must be in original languages

A sample plan of study for the program is as follows:


  • 1st Semester/Term:
    • CLASS-GA 1003 or CLASS-GA 1009: Latin Lit Origins Repub Augustan Movement or Greek Literature
    • CLASS-GA 1012 or CLASS-GA 1011: Latin Rhetoric/Stylistic or Greek Rhetoric and Stylistics
  • 2nd Semester/Term:
    • CLASS-GA 1005 or CLASS-GA 1013: Latin Lit, Imperial Lit or Greek Literature Survey
    • CLASS-GA XXXX: Course in Greek or Roman History OR course in Archaeology or Ancient Art
  • 3rd Semester/Term:
    • CLASS-GA XXXX: Classics Elective
    • CLASS-GA 2XXX: Course in Greek or Latin Author
  • 4th Semester/Term:
    • CLASS-GA 2XXX: Course in Greek or Latin Author
    • CLASS-GA 2XXX: Course in Greek or Latin Author

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will have achieved:


  1. Proficiency in the Latin and/or Greek languages
  2. Research skills necessary to access and utilize both the original texts and the scholarly literature on the subject
  3. Critical thinking about the Greek and Roman cultures and the wider Mediterranean region
  4. Preparedness to proceed to the next academic level, the PhD
  5. The Master of Arts in Classics is of high value in the teaching profession and has applicability in arts and cultural fields beyond academia
