Overview
The PhD program in Environmental Studies at New York University is designed to tackle the complex problems facing humans, animals, and the environment in a holistic, integrative, and transdisciplinary manner. The program focuses on three research themes: Food and Land Use Systems, Ecological Systems, and Governance Systems, with a deep integration of human, animal, and environmental issues.
Program Description
The PhD program in Environmental Studies aims to provide actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders by better understanding the drivers and impacts of planetary crises, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The program prepares graduates for a range of career paths, from academia to government, civil society, and the private sector.

All applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Science are required to submit the general application requirements, which include:

- ENVST-GA 1030: Research Colloquium in Environmental Studies 1 (2 credits)
- ENVST-GA 1040: Research Colloquium in Environmental Studies II (2 credits)
- ENVST-GA 1050: Graduate Seminar: Research and Writing 1 (4 credits)
- ENVST-GA 1060: Graduate Seminar: Research and Writing II (4 credits)

Additional Program Requirements
- Qualifying Exams: PhD students will take their qualifying exam(s) in their chosen specialization(s) by the end of their fifth semester.
- Prospectus: PhD students will write and defend their prospectus by the end of their sixth semester.
- Prospectus and Final Dissertation Committees: The final dissertation committee must have at least five members, including three FAS faculty, with at least two ES faculty members.

The sample plan of study outlines the coursework and credits required for each semester, including:
- 1st Semester: ENVST-GA 1000, ENVST-GA 1020, and an elective (12 credits)
- 2nd Semester: ENVST-GA 1010, ENVST-GA 1030, and an elective (10 credits)
