Poetics and Theory (Advanced Certificate)
Overview
The Poetics and Theory Advanced Certificate program is designed for students enrolled in PhD and MA programs in the Graduate School of Arts and Science. The program requires the completion of 20 credits, with a maximum of 8 credits that may be shared with the credits required for the MA or PhD.
Program Description
All students enrolled in PhD and MA programs in the Graduate School of Arts and Science are eligible for the Poetics and Theory Advanced Certificate program. Students funded through the MacCracken program pay no additional tuition or fees. To apply, students should submit a statement of purpose, a letter of recommendation, clearance from the departmental director of graduate studies, and the first two pages of the regular GSAS application form to the director.
Admissions
All applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) are required to submit the general application requirements, which include:
- Academic Transcripts
- Test Scores (if required)
- Applicant Statements
- Résumé or Curriculum Vitae
- Letters of Recommendation
- A non-refundable application fee
Program Requirements
The program requires the completion of 20 credits. In addition to the five courses, students seeking the advanced certificate must present a paper at least once at one of the yearly workshops or conferences offered by the Program in Poetics and Theory. The paper must focus on a topic contributing to the conference's overall aim and may be a chapter of the dissertation.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will have:
- Immersion in theoretical approaches that foster interdisciplinary collaboration in the study of the relations between aesthetics and hermeneutics, philosophy and literature, social institutions, and the work of art.
- Knowledge of the historical progression from the ancient practices of poetics and rhetoric to their modern theoretical counterparts.
- Ability to communicate and teach integrated approaches to theoretical concerns in the Humanities, applicable across disciplines.
