Workshop Digital Photography

Overview

The Workshop Digital Photography was held from October 9-13, 2006, at LMU Munich, Medieninformatik, led by Andreas Butz. The goal of the workshop was to practice the creative use of digital cameras and learn how to achieve specific image goals using digital camera technology.

Daily Activities

  • Day 1: The workshop began with a discussion on design through camera position, perspective, and image composition, followed by exercises with the cameras. Participants then explored the surrounding area, taking photos of the building and the block up to the Pinakotheken, resulting in interesting detail shots and perspectives.
  • Day 2: The theme of the second day was the Munich Viktualienmarkt. Participants aimed to capture people, situations, or details typical of the market, ideally telling a "story." This task proved more challenging than expected. The day's activities included taking detail shots and variations on the theme of consumption.
  • Day 3: After discussing light and exposure time, the group visited the Karlsplatz (Stachus) and its surroundings in the evening, equipped with tripods, to capture the colorful mixed light situation and experiment with the effects of long exposure times.
  • Day 4: Following discussions on design possibilities using the aperture and further talks on image composition, the photographic goal of the day was the Munich Botanical Garden.
  • Day 5: On the final day, participants reviewed their work from the previous days, selected their favorite photos, and prepared them for presentation on the website and for printing at a photo service. The printed photos (20x30cm) were later displayed in the hallway of the LFE Medieninformatik, Amalienstrafle 17, 80333 Munich, 5th floor.

Workshop Details

The workshop provided a theoretical background through daily discussions using slides, which are available as a PDF file (16MB). Participants used their own cameras, with a few loaner cameras available, covering a range of camera types from simple compact 3MP cameras to current Four-Thirds models and SLR cameras. The workshop's webpage features a selection of photos taken during the event.
