Introduction to the MSc by Research Program
The MSc by Research program is a research-based degree that allows students to explore a specific area of chemistry in depth. The program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop their research skills and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in their chosen field.
Research Areas
The Department of Chemistry at Lancaster University has a number of research groups that students can join, including:
- Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy
- Physical and analytical chemistry at Lancaster encompasses the characterisation of chemical structures, mechanisms and properties.
- Electrochemistry and Surfaces
- Electrochemistry is a diverse, multidisciplinary topic at the interface of electrical processes and chemical reactions.
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Inorganic chemistry at Lancaster focuses on the design, synthesis and study of new transition metal-based and main-group compounds, for application in catalysis, materials and medicine.
- Organic Chemistry
- Organic chemistry at Lancaster focuses on the design and study of new organic and catalytic processes, for the synthesis of small molecules with application in materials and medicine.
- Theoretical and Computational Chemistry
- Chemical theory and computation at Lancaster focuses on advancing the fundamental description of chemical systems as well as the application of simulations to provide insights and interpretations of experimental data.
Application Process
To apply for the MSc by Research program, students must follow these steps:
- Find a Research Supervisor: Students must find a research supervisor from one of the Department's research groups.
- Develop a Research Proposal: Students must develop a research proposal with their supervisor, which should include:
- A section that defines and characterises the selected research area
- A section that briefly surveys and sums up the state of the research in this area
- A section that identifies deficiencies in the research area which the student would like to address in their Master's by Research degree
- A section that outlines some possible research directions that the student might pursue
- A section detailing the methods the student envisages using in their studies
- A list of references that the student cites in the above sections
- Submit an Application: Students must submit their application, which will be assessed by the Admissions Office and the Department.
- Start Dates: Students can apply at any time of the year, but they will need to select one of the predefined start dates: October, January, or April.
Fees and Funding
Information on funding available, tuition fees, and living costs can be found in the Postgraduate Fees and Funding section.
Other Methods of Applying
The Department offers a number of different routes to beginning study, including:
- Apply for a funded MSc by Research opportunity: The Department offers a range of MSc by Research degrees funded by many different sources, including research councils, industries, or charities.
- Related courses: The Department offers a range of related courses in Chemistry, Natural Sciences, and Material Sciences that may appeal to students.
