Nuclear Engineering BEng Hons

The Nuclear Engineering BEng Hons program at Lancaster University is a three-year undergraduate degree that focuses on the design, application, and maintenance of systems and processes required to successfully utilize nuclear energy in various industries.

Overview

Nuclear energy is used in medical applications, such as radiotherapy, scans, and sterilization, and creates carbon-efficient energy, contributing to reducing climate change. Nuclear engineers focus on the design, application, and maintenance of systems and processes required to utilize nuclear energy in these industries. The program at Lancaster University has close connections to three nuclear energy sites within a 30-mile radius, providing students with site visits, project work, and guest lectures.

Top Reasons to Study with Us

  • Practical hands-on courses, including lab-based sessions and project work
  • Brand new state-of-the-art facilities
  • Get real-world experience with placement years

What to Expect

The three-year BEng Hons Nuclear Engineering degree starts with a general engineering first year, including core themes of design, materials, thermodynamics, and heat transfer, along with mathematics. Students share this experience with all School of Engineering students, regardless of specialization. In Year 2, students specialize in nuclear engineering, learning core themes such as nuclear science, nuclear engineering systems, decommissioning, and nuclear safety. The final year enables students to apply their skills in an individual project, using professional software and developing research and design skills further.

Personal Development

Students develop valuable transferable skills, such as working in collaboration, communication, and the ability to design, build, and implement systems. They also grow practical skills in testing, system maintenance, digital proficiencies, and the ability to consider and maintain work safety practices in the nuclear industry.

3 Things Our Nuclear Engineering Students Would Like You to Know

  1. All engineers share the same newly-built facilities, using nuclear instrumentation with neutron and other radiation sources, integrated software in computer labs, or working collaboratively with lecturers and friends.
  2. The University's nuclear research and industrial collaborations are big attractions for studying here, with geographical advantages such as Sellafield and Heysham Power Stations in the area.
  3. The University is highly-regarded for design in research and encourages young engineers to do things differently, designing and innovating as they learn.
