Certificate in Gender & Women's Studies

Introduction

The Certificate in Gender & Women's Studies is a cross-disciplinary program designed for students with no previous exposure to gender and women's studies. This certificate offers a survey into issues and themes in the field, inviting students to explore the lives and experiences of women, historically and cross-culturally, and to critically examine the social, political, and economic institutions shaping women's lives.

Program Details

Current York students may complete the requirements of the certificate while they pursue degrees in other York programs. The certificate program is also open to students who have already completed a university degree program. Applicants without prior university education may apply to be admitted to the direct-entry certificate program through York University's mature student application process.

  • The certificate requires 24 credits, effective from the Fall/Winter 2016/2017 academic session.
  • Required courses include:
    • AP/GL GWST 1501 9.00/1502 6.00: Introduction to Gender and Women's Studies
    • AP/GL Any 2nd year 2000 level GWST course (6 credits)
    • AP/GL Any 3rd or 4th year core or non-core GWST course (6 credits)
    • AP/GL GWST 3555 6.00/3556 6.00: Genealogies of Feminist Theorizing

Core and Non-Core Courses

  • Non-core courses: These are offered by other teaching units and may be acceptable for program credit or cross-listed with the Gender and Women's Studies program. Credits used toward another program's major or minor may also be used towards the certificate.

Graduating with a Certificate

  • A minimum cumulative grade point average of 4.00 is required to satisfy certificate requirements.
  • Students must submit an application to graduate from a certificate program.
  • Transcript notation that the requirements for a certificate have been completed will be made once the Registrar's Office has received notice from the unit administering the program.
  • Certificates will not be conferred until candidates have successfully completed an undergraduate degree program if they are simultaneously enrolled in a degree and a certificate program.
  • The Faculty does not award certificates retroactively. Refer to the academic standards section for details of the undergraduate certificate minimum standards.
