Overview

The continuing education course "Introduction to Data Competence" is a short course that provides participants with the fundamental skills to collect, manage, evaluate, and apply data in a critical manner. The course is structured around the five core competencies of data competence: basics, data collection, data management, data evaluation, and data application.

Course Structure

The course consists of theoretical inputs and group work, including discussions and presentations of results. Course materials are provided digitally, and the course takes place as a face-to-face event. A laptop is required for group work.


Target Audience

The course is aimed at anyone who wants to gain insight into the basics of data competence and learn how to critically handle data. No prior knowledge is required, as the course introduces the most important theoretical concepts.


Teaching Staff

  • Silvio Suter: Studied geography and English literature at the University of Basel. Professionally engaged in topics related to mobility, transport, data, and visualization. Has been a lecturer in GIS at the University of Basel since 2016.

Course Content

The course analyzes which types of data visualizations are particularly effective and why presenting data as stories (data storytelling) is so memorable. After completing the course, participants can critically evaluate and reflectively categorize data visualizations. They acquire a data understanding that allows them to question the quality of data and effectively present their own data.


Location

The course takes place in the seminar rooms of the University of Basel's Continuing Education department, located at Steinengraben 22, 4051 Basel, in seminar room 013.
