Self-Branding and Self-Promotion Course

Course Information

The course will take place on:


  • Tuesday, April 7, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Wednesday, April 8, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Registration opens on January 21, 2026, at 9:00 AM, and the registration deadline is March 10, 2026, at 12:00 PM. The course is free of charge and is limited to doctoral candidates and postdocs of the University of Basel, with a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 16 participants. The trainer for the course is Dr. Petra Wüst. The course offers 1 ECTS credit and is organized by the Graduate Center, Transferable Skills.

Aims

The course aims to teach participants how to position themselves successfully in an academic, scientific, and business environment by creating a clear-cut profile, an attractive personal brand, and clever self-marketing. Personal image and self-promotion are crucial elements in successful career development, and this course will provide participants with the tools and techniques to become more visible and successful in their careers.


Content

The course will cover the following topics:


  • The importance of having a personal image and leaving a strong impression
  • The 7 rules and 13 elements of an unbeatable personal image
  • Assessing resources and strengths to build a personal brand
  • Developing a personal brand mantra
  • Defining career goals and taking a personal career development outlook
  • Clever self-marketing using the Self Branding Model (SBM)Ū
  • Tactics and styles for successful job interviews
  • Using LinkedIn for networking and job opportunities
  • Establishing a professional network and utilizing it for support and promotion

Methods

The course will use a variety of methods, including:


  • Well-defined, focused inputs
  • Single and partner work
  • Small group and plenary interaction

Target Group

The course is designed for all doctoral candidates and postdocs.


Requirements

Participants are required to complete pre-work, which includes introductory videos, a feedback exercise, and a questionnaire, before being admitted to the course.


About the Trainer

The course trainer is Dr. Petra Wüst.


Workload

The course requires a total of 30 hours of work, including:


  • 4 hours of preliminary work
  • 2 x 8 hours of course attendance
  • 10 hours of follow-up work

Feature

Once registration is open, applications will be collected for 24 hours, and course places will be allocated by lot. All registrations received after the initial 24-hour period will be put on a waiting list and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Course places and waiting list positions will be confirmed by email.


Location

The course will take place at the Universitätsbibliothek Basel, GRACE room 306 (3rd floor), Schönbeinstrasse 18-20, 4056 Basel.
