Introduction to Mechanical with Automotive Engineering BEng (Hons)

The Mechanical with Automotive Engineering BEng (Hons) course is designed for engineers who want to apply fundamental mechanical engineering knowledge to the challenges of the automotive industry. This includes areas such as cost, emissions, performance, and materials. Students will study vehicle design, manufacturing processes, and component analysis in the context of the automotive market.

Course Structure

The course lasts 3 years, starting in September 2026 and ending in 2029. Welcome week starts on 21 September 2026. The course is made up of units of study, with compulsory units covering core concepts and optional units allowing students to specialize in particular areas of knowledge.

Year 1

  • Design, materials and manufacturing 1: Introduces the engineering design process, integrating materials science and manufacturing processes theory.
  • Engineering mathematics: Reinforces understanding of basic mathematical techniques that form the foundation of engineering analysis.
  • Mechatronics: Explores principles and technology for embedding electronic control in mechanical systems.
  • Responsible engineering practice: Covers the wider responsibilities of being an engineer, including complex ethical issues and environmental impacts.
  • Solid mechanics 1: Introduces fundamental principles of statics, kinematics, and dynamics.
  • Thermofluids 1: Studies fundamental concepts and equations of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.

Year 2

  • Control and mechatronics: Analyses and designs closed-loop control systems.
  • Design, materials and manufacturing 2: Develops techniques and constraints of professional, team-based design practice.
  • Engineering computation: Introduces numerical and computational techniques for analysis, modelling, and simulation.
  • Solid mechanics 2: Analyses vibration of mechanical systems, torsion, and buckling of structural sections.
  • Thermofluids 2: Develops ability to apply principles of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics to engineering problems.

Year 3

  • BEng individual project: Applies knowledge to a demanding investigation or design project.
  • Future vehicle and chassis architectures: Covers automotive chassis and vehicle systems, functionality, and production approaches.
  • Sustainable thermal and electric propulsion: Develops knowledge of automotive propulsion systems and components.
  • Vehicle dynamics: Studies components of a vehicle suspension system and their interaction.
  • Final year options: Allows choice from a range of units covering areas such as engineering management, product design, and structural mechanics.

Learning and Assessment

Students are taught and assessed by a variety of methods, including laboratory sessions, lectures, online resources, practical sessions, seminars, tutorials, and workshops. Assessment methods include coursework, practical work, presentations, projects, reports, and written examinations.

Professional Accreditations

The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of demonstrating in part the knowledge and understanding required for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Recognition of Professional Qualifications

The degree is recognized as a higher academic qualification and may also be accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom, potentially entitling graduates to work in specific professions within the UK and abroad.

Entry Requirements

Selection is based on the whole application, considering previous academic achievements, predicted or achieved grades, subjects studied, and personal statements. The typical offer is AAA in three A levels, including A* in Mathematics and A in Physics.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

36 points overall with 7, 7, 6 in three Higher Level subjects, including 6 in Physics and 7 in either HL Mathematics.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (RQF)

DDD in the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (RQF) plus grade A in A level Mathematics.

English Language Requirements

If English is not the first language, a suitable English language qualification is required, such as IELTS with an overall score of 6.5.

Fees and Funding

Tuition fees are liable to increase annually, and information on fees is not yet available for this course. Students may be eligible for a tuition fee loan and can also apply for scholarships and bursaries.

Application Information

The course code is T140, and the institution code is B16. The application deadline for overseas students is 14 January 2026. The selection process usually assesses the UCAS application, with interviews for certain qualifications or exceptional circumstances.
