Introduction to the Postgraduate Program

The Postgraduate Program in Ethnomusicology and Music Anthropology is designed for graduates of various disciplines who are interested in studying the relationship between music and culture in the past and present.


Program Objectives and Prospects

The objective of the program is to attract scientists with high scientific potential to create a community of new researchers who love music in its different expressions and wish to study it from the perspective of Ethnomusicology and Music Anthropology. This program will be useful for those who want to pursue doctoral studies or are involved in teaching music, or are interested in managing music within state or private cultural organizations and institutions.


Program Structure and Organization

The program is offered by the Department of Music Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The duration of the program is four academic semesters, including the time required for the preparation of a dissertation. To obtain the postgraduate degree, each student must attend and pass all the courses offered by the program and complete a postgraduate dissertation, accumulating 120 ECTS credits.

  • Sound, space, memory
  • Music, history, culture
  • Music industries and popular music
  • Music Anthropology, Ethnomusicology, and audiovisual media

Admission and Tuition

The program is free of tuition fees, making it the first and only free Postgraduate Program in Ethnomusicology and Music Anthropology in Greece.


Research Areas

The program focuses on the relationship between music and culture, exploring topics such as the perception of time, space, and sound, and the concept of the "sacred" in different cultures. It also examines the music industry and popular music, as well as the application of audiovisual media in research, documentation, and dissemination of scientific knowledge.
