Course Description

The purpose of this annual course is to guide students in developing a scientifically and historically grounded perspective that will enable them to understand and experience the main harmonic and structural processes of tonal music through the study of representative works of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic music periods. Among the most substantial theoretical and analytical issues addressed in this course are the concepts of musical phrase, cadence, and harmonic functions, tonalization and transposition, harmonic and structural rhythm, reductive analytical method, processes of repetition, variation, development, and contrast, as well as structural types of proposition, period, and various hybrid phrasal structures, and the tripartite and bipartite organization of a broader musical excerpt.
