Introduction to the Postgraduate Program in Cognitive Science

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) offers a postgraduate program in Cognitive Science, which is an interdisciplinary field of study that focuses on the study of cognition and cognitive phenomena. This program combines approaches from philosophy, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, and computer science/artificial intelligence.

Program Description

The postgraduate program in Cognitive Science is organized by the Department of History and Philosophy of Science and is carried out in collaboration with the Departments of Informatics and Telecommunications, Philology, and Psychology of the NKUA. The program aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of cognitive functions, including perception, memory, learning, attention, thought, emotions, language, and consciousness.

Program Objectives

The main objective of the program is to unify computational approaches to cognition with basic experimental research and general thinking about cognition and the mechanisms that support it. The collaboration between the natural sciences, humanities, and philosophy has proven to be particularly important for the education of new scientists who are familiar with methods for forming and testing empirical theories, as well as with techniques of computational simulation.

Admission Criteria

Applicants must hold a degree from a recognized university in a relevant field, such as natural sciences, polytechnic schools, computer science, social sciences, or philosophy. Graduates of other specialties may also apply, in accordance with the applicable regulations. Applicants must have a good command of both Greek and English.

Program Structure

The program is designed to last two years and leads to a Master's degree in Cognitive Science. Up to 40 students will be admitted to the program for the academic year.

Application Procedure

The submission of applications will take place electronically from May 1, 2023, to September 3, 2023. More information is available on the program's website.

Start of Classes

The start of classes is scheduled for October 2023.

Research Areas

The program covers a wide range of research areas, including cognitive psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, computer science, and philosophy. Students will have the opportunity to engage in research projects and collaborate with faculty members from various departments.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the program will have a wide range of career prospects, including research and academic positions, as well as careers in industries related to cognitive science, such as artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, and neuroscience.
