Master in International Economics and Public Policy

The Master in International Economics and Public Policy (MIEPP) is a program offered by Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites for admission are:


  • A completed bachelor-level degree in business, economics, or a related field of study with at least six semesters regular study period.
  • If the degree is not yet completed, admission is possible with at least 135 ECTS in a bachelor's program that takes six semesters and awards a total of 180 ECTS, along with a written official confirmation by the university.

English Proficiency

English proficiency is required, with a B2 English level that can be proven by one of the following tests:


  • TOEFL: A minimum score of 72 on the Internet-Based Test (IBT) or 47 on the Revised TOEFL Paper-Delivered Test (PdT).
  • IELTS Academic: An overall band score of at least 5.5.
  • Cambridge English Qualifications: First Certificate in English (FCE) or a higher-level certification, such as Advanced (CAE) or Proficient (CPE) from the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.
  • Telc English B2.
  • Oxford Test of English (OTE): A minimum average score of 111 out of 140.
  • Academic Pearson Test of English (PTE): A result within the range of 59–75 points.
  • A University Entrance Qualification from an English-language institution.

Additional Documents

Required documents include:


  • A letter of motivation (in English, max. 1 page)
  • Short CV (in English, max. 2 pages)
  • Approval to study at Johannes Gutenberg University (for students who did not receive their Bachelor-level degree at a German University)

Optional documents include:


  • Test results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
  • Evidence of any relevant professional training or work experience.
  • Evidence of any outstanding achievements, such as receiving special academic funding, awards, or prizes.
