Master of Science in Sport Science: Diagnostics and Intervention in High-Performance Sports
The Master of Science in Sport Science: Diagnostics and Intervention in High-Performance Sports is a research-oriented program that delves into the sport, natural, and social science disciplines. Students acquire competencies for scientifically grounded diagnoses in the area of human movement, subsequent interventions, and their evaluation. Upon completion of the program, graduates can plan, control, and assess interventions in the development of motor performance capabilities in a theoretically founded and target-group-specific manner.
Overview
- Study Direction: Sport Science
- Study Type: Advanced
- Degree: Master of Science
- Language of Instruction: German, partially English
- Study Form: Full-time, Part-time
- Start of Study: Winter semester
- Admission Restriction: Locally restricted, aptitude test
- Standard Study Period: 4 semesters
- Credit Points: 120
Admission Requirements
- A first professionally qualifying degree in Sport Science, a human science, or another relevant field
- English language proficiency at least at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
- Proof of engagement in competitive or high-performance sports, which can be demonstrated by:
- A trainer's license (A-C) in a sport, acquired based on the "Framework Guidelines for Qualification in the Area of the German Olympic Sports Confederation," or a comparable international trainer qualification
- Or proof of one's own activity in competitive or high-performance sports within the last two years
- Applicants whose first professionally qualifying degree is not in Sport Science must also provide proof of competencies equivalent to the following modules from the Bachelor's program in Sport Science at the University of Leipzig: , , , , and optionally one of the modules 08-001-0005, 08-, or
An aptitude test is required for this program. Please inform yourself on the faculty's website about the application process for the aptitude test and the separate deadlines that apply.
Content
The study program begins with an in-depth exploration of diagnostic methods from medicine, biomechanics, and social sciences. Another focus area is specific research methodology content that expands students' ability to work scientifically.
This is followed by modules from the area of sport-specific performance development, talent development, and securing load capacity. Here, students are imparted with competencies for creating scientifically grounded diagnoses, subsequent interventions (training programs), and their evaluation, which are then continued with application-oriented study content.
In the elective area, students can deepen their application orientation by choosing interdisciplinary modules or prepare for a Ph.D. by intensifying theoretical foundations.
The structure of the study program includes:
- 60 credit points in modules from the compulsory area
- An application-oriented elective area with 30 credit points
- The Master's thesis (including defense) with 30 credit points
In the elective area, knowledge in various application areas (e.g., performance diagnostics, training control, application research) can be deepened from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Special Features
- German-language program
- Events can be held entirely or partially in English
- A stay abroad/practical semester is possible in the third or fourth semester
- Cooperation agreements with top-level sports associations and the IAT Leipzig ensure access to high-performance sports during the study period
Career Prospects
The Master's program in Sport Science: Diagnostics and Intervention in High-Performance Sports prepares students for a career in scientific institutions or in scientific task fields of sports. Graduates will be able to solve complex and interdisciplinary tasks in the areas of diagnostics and intervention independently and further develop methods.
Employment opportunities exist:
- In various areas of German sports organizations as academic trainers
- In the high-performance sports system as scientific coordinators or performance diagnostics specialists
- As personal trainers or performance diagnostics specialists for commercial providers
- As training and movement scientists at universities or in research institutions
- As independent entrepreneurs
To prepare for the professional entry, students should establish contacts with potential employers during their studies and gain initial experiences through internships. The Career Service supports students in this process.
Internships and Study Abroad
A practical semester can be integrated into the study program in the third or fourth semester.
A study abroad period is generally recommended. It is to be organized by the students themselves (with the support of the responsible institution).
Study Documents
- Examination (PO), study (SO), and aptitude test regulations (EFO), study schedule, and module descriptions
