Program Content
The master's program offers a deepening of theater science knowledge and methods to qualify students for diverse practical professional fields and scientific activities. With the teaching and research paradigm of transculturality, students are enabled to describe and analyze theatrical practices, the art form, and the institution of theater in a transcultural context. Students learn to recognize and independently process forms of theater-specific knowledge production and dissemination within and outside institutionalized theater. The connection between contemporary theater and theater history, as well as the interpenetration of theory and practice, is fundamental.
Structure of the Program
The master's program has a scope of 120 credit points, with 20 credit points allocated to the master's thesis. The program includes either a research internship (research-oriented focus) or a profession-related internship or several internships (application-oriented focus) with a minimum duration of four months in a subject-related institution. The internship(s) can also be completed abroad.
Career Prospects
The M.A. in Theaterwissenschaft transkulturell prepares students for leadership positions in the academic sector or in transcultural theater practice. The research-oriented degree qualifies students particularly for scientific activities at universities, colleges, and non-university research institutions, while the application-oriented degree qualifies them primarily for activities in dramaturgy, directing, and curatorial practice in established institutions or in the international free scene.
Additional Information
Beyond the mentioned career paths, graduates with both degrees can access leading positions in the international museum, festival, and science sector, in public relations and cultural mediation, or in archives, publishing houses, and libraries. They can also pursue journalistic activities in all current and future media forms, event management in the public or commercial sector, and responsible activities in cultural administration. To prepare for the job market, students should establish contacts with potential employers during their studies and gain initial experiences through internships. The Career Service supports students in this process.
