Mathematics M. Sc.

The English-language Master's program in Mathematics offers in-depth, research-oriented training in a wide range of mathematical disciplines. Under the guidance of internationally renowned faculty, you will be involved in current research topics. The broad and flexible curriculum of the program allows you to develop a competency profile that suits your further plans - whether it's a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a career in the private or public sector.

Overview

  • Study Program: Mathematics M. Sc.
  • Field of Study: Informatik and Mathematik
  • Type of Study: Further education
  • Degree: Master of Science
  • Language of Instruction: English
  • Form of Study: Full-time, part-time
  • Start of Study: Winter semester, summer semester
  • Admission Restriction: No admission restriction
  • Standard Period of Study: 4 semesters
  • Credits: 120

Zugangsvoraussetzungen (Admission Requirements)

  • In the rule, a first professional qualifying university degree
    • in the field of Mathematics or
    • in an adjacent field, if courses from the field of Mathematics (on a comparable level with a subject study) in the amount of at least 100 LP, as well as courses in the amount of at least 20 LP from areas in which mathematical methods are essentially used, were successfully completed
  • or proof that, in the event of an organized study, this degree can be achieved by the beginning of the Master's program
  • Knowledge of English at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (or equivalent)

Inhalte (Contents)

The Master's program in Mathematics is a consecutive and English-language Master's program. Through the English-language orientation, you acquire important competencies for research activities in internationally oriented working groups or companies.

The study structure allows for individual choices and diverse specialization possibilities. Deepening courses are available in the sub-areas of Algebra, Analysis and Partial Differential Equations, Functional Analysis, Geometry, Dynamic Systems, Numerics, and Stochastics, and thus cover a broad spectrum of core areas of pure and applied mathematics. In addition, the integration of further fields of application (biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, economics) as well as internships at non-university research institutions or in industry is possible.

Structure of the Program

The Master's program includes a student workload of 120 credits (LP).

The curriculum is divided into

  • Basic modules (at least 20 LP)
  • Advanced modules (at least 20 LP)
  • Deepening modules (at least 10 LP)
  • Professionalization modules (at least 10 LP)

The professionalization area serves to orient oneself with regard to later career opportunities.

In addition, further supplementary modules are available, which offer you additional opportunities to design the course of study in a subject-specific manner.

The study program is completed in the fourth semester with a Master's thesis of 25 LP and the accompanying Master's seminar of 5 LP.

Special Features

  • International - English as the course language
  • Broadly designed professionalization area
  • No compulsory minor subject
  • Small courses with internationally renowned lecturers
  • Modern module design (lecture plus seminar) systematically introduces you to research topics and promotes communication skills
  • Research at the highest level - supported by the local Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Natural Sciences
  • Opportunity to continue your career in the international graduate school (IMPRS MiS)

Berufliche Perspektiven (Career Prospects)

Classic areas of employment for mathematicians and mathematicians can be found in banks, insurance companies, consulting and economic companies, in research and development departments of large companies or commercial enterprises. Exciting modern areas of application can be found, in particular, in the fields of medicine and biosciences, logistics, energy industry, climate research, AI, and data science.

To deepen the skills acquired, a subsequent doctoral program is offered. You benefit from excellent opportunities on site at the Mathematical Institute and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Natural Sciences, for example, within the framework of the graduate school (IMPRS MiS).

Praktika und Auslandsaufenthalte (Internships and Study Abroad)

No compulsory internships are planned. Within the framework of some modules, an internship can be completed at a non-university research institution or in a company. Internships or study stays abroad are explicitly possible and desired.
