Program Overview
The University of Leipzig offers a program in Spanish Language and Literature for future teachers at secondary schools. The program focuses on the Spanish language, literature, and culture, as well as didactics and methodology for teaching Spanish as a foreign language.
Program Structure
The program consists of 300 credit points and takes 10 semesters to complete. It includes courses in Spanish language and literature, didactics, and methodology, as well as a mandatory stay abroad in a Spanish-speaking country.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the program, applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and meet the following requirements:
- Language proficiency in Spanish at level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
- A phoniatric certificate, which can only be issued by a specialist in phoniatrics or an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist with a focus on voice and speech disorders
- A stay abroad in a Spanish-speaking country for at least three months
Program Content
The program covers the following areas:
- Sprachwissenschaft (Linguistics): Introduction to Spanish linguistics, history, structure, and function of the Spanish language, and varieties of Spanish
- Literaturwissenschaft und Kulturstudien (Literary and Cultural Studies): Introduction to Spanish literature and cultural studies, literary genres, epochs, and authors, and cultural phenomena in the Spanish-speaking world
- Fachdidaktik (Didactics): Theories and models of foreign language teaching, reflection and practical application of didactic concepts, and two accompanied teaching practices
- Sprachpraxis und Landeskunde (Language Practice and Area Studies): Reception and production of Spanish texts on general and cultural topics, as well as political and social phenomena in Spain and Spanish-speaking countries (level A2 to C1+)
Career Prospects
The program prepares students for a career as teachers of Spanish at secondary schools. After completing the program, graduates can pursue a teaching position in any federal state in Germany. Alternatively, they can work in adult education or other institutions that require language proficiency, literary and cultural knowledge, and didactic skills.
Additional Information
- The program includes five mandatory internships in different areas of study (observation and own teaching hours in schools)
- A mandatory module "K顤per-Stimme-Kommunikation" (Body-Voice-Communication) prepares students for a speech-intensive and communicative professional life
- A mandatory module on "Politische Bildung und Medienbildung" (Political Education and Media Education)
- Study abroad periods are possible
- The program can be studied as a teaching extension subject from the third subject semester onwards
Application and Enrollment
The application period for the winter semester is from May 2nd to July 15th, and for the summer semester from December 1st to March 15th. The program is subject to admission restrictions (NC).
