University Program Information

The University of Leipzig offers a Master of Science in Journalism program, which includes a practical phase consisting of a journalistic traineeship in a media editorial office. This traineeship lasts for at least nine months, typically twelve months, and is designed to equip students with the skills to work as editors in a media company.

General Information

The minimum nine-month traineeship is bound to a traineeship employment contract and takes place in an editorial office that produces journalistic content and is capable of guiding trainees. During the traineeship, students are introduced to various fields of activity, particularly in news editing and a theme or specialist department.

The recognition of equivalent training in media editorial offices, especially abroad, is decided by the examination committee. A journalistic traineeship completed prior to the study program can be recognized, reducing the study duration from three to two years.

The following proofs must be provided:

  • Students must create a detailed traineeship report describing the organization, area of deployment, tasks, and activities performed.
  • A member of the management of the organization must issue a confirmation of the duration and content of the traineeship, as well as the information in the traineeship report.

Media Partners

The Journalism study program is in permanent exchange with around 40 media editorial offices to support students in applying for a traineeship position. These cooperations have grown over the years and are an important pillar of the study program. The renowned media houses include supra-regional and regional daily newspapers, public broadcasters, news agencies, editorial networks, and production companies.
