Master of Science Journalismus
The Master of Science Journalismus is a three-year program that provides comprehensive competencies for the constantly changing field of journalism and concludes with a Master of Science degree.
Phases of Study
The M.Sc. Journalismus is divided into three sections: a Grundlagenphase (foundation phase) in the first year, a Projektphase (project phase) in the second year, and a Praxisphase (practical phase) in the third year. The first two years at the university consist of three content pillars with various modules that impart specific skills.
The final year includes an integrated journalistic traineeship in a media editorial office, for which the program cooperates with media partners throughout Germany.
Three Pillars of Study
- The first pillar of the Master's program in Journalismus deepens theoretical and practical knowledge of journalistic working methods. This also includes competencies for organizing and developing digital journalism, as well as legal and ethical norms.
- The second pillar lays the informatics-scientific foundations of digital and data-driven journalism, which are becoming increasingly important in the profession. Students learn to understand how algorithms and databases work, on which digital applications in journalism are also based.
- The third pillar imparts competencies in applied social and journalism research. Students acquire skills to empirically investigate current phenomena in journalism using scientific methods.
Journalistic Innovations Project
The three content-related pillars culminate in the central module "Innovationsprojekt: Journalismus im Digitalen" (Innovation Project: Digital Journalism). Here, students apply the acquired competencies in a project-oriented and team-based manner.
The focus of the innovation projects is on the creative and innovative development of a journalistic offer, product, or format against the background of dynamic media and social change, for which journalism must always provide new solutions.
Projects are aimed at areas such as cross-media, online, social media, or mobile journalism, as well as dealing with and integrating data and algorithms, e.g., data journalism.
Career Orientation
The Master of Science Journalismus fills a significant gap in academic qualification for the profession and research field of journalism with its concept.
The study program prepares students for journalistic and publishing activities in editorial offices of daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, online and social media offerings, news agencies, production companies, media companies, publishers, and press offices, as well as for communication and media research.
Graduates are capable of project-oriented, creative work based on journalistic knowledge and skills, empirical research of media phenomena, and dealing with technological developments.
In particular, they are enabled to work as editors and in leadership positions in media companies to shape the digital transformation of journalism.
Additionally, they can pursue a doctorate.
