Molecular Biology and Genetics
The Molecular Biology and Genetics program at the University of Guelph is a lab-intensive major that focuses on the study of genetics, cells, and molecular biology. Students in this program will explore the genetics of animals, plants, and microorganisms, as well as the structure and function of cells.
Program Description
In this program, students will investigate processes in gene regulation, developmental biology, and the molecular basis for inherited diseases and regulatory disorders. They will also learn about the application of molecular genetics in biotechnology and medicine. The program offers a general degree or the option to focus on areas such as molecular biology, cell biology, developmental biology, or agricultural genetics.
Available Electives
Available electives cover topics as varied as:
- Epigenetics
- Molecular virology
- Cell function and signalling
- Applied bioinformatics
Hands-on Experience
In molecular biology labs, students will learn cutting-edge skills and techniques used in the biotechnology and medical sectors. Through a fourth-year research project, students can lead their own research project in a lab under the supervision of a Molecular and Cellular Biology faculty member.
Research Opportunities
Students will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty members in state-of-the-art research labs and facilities. The program qualifies students for postgraduate training in cell or molecular biology and genetics, including clinical genetics and genetic counselling.
