Program Overview
The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) is a combined degree program that allows students to study a combination of Arts and Law courses over a period of five years full-time. Upon completion of the first three years, students will have completed all the courses required for the Bachelor of Arts degree. In the final two years of the combined degree program, students complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and may enrol in these two years on a less than full-time basis.
Description
Within this combined degree program, students acquire skills and knowledge through the Arts studies they have chosen, and then complete the Diploma of Legal Practice offered in the student's fourth and fifth years, meeting both the academic and practical training requirements to practice law in NSW. Students can choose majors/minors in the following course areas:

- Japanese Studies (either Beginner or Intermediate Sequence)

Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, graduates will have:
- Skills to provide professional advice, based on specialised knowledge of law and its application in diverse contexts, to employers, government, and individual clients.
Admission Requirements
Eligibility for admission to this program is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank, or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme. The University of Newcastle accepts a range of qualifications to determine eligibility for admission, including:
- Australian or overseas senior secondary qualifications (such as the HSC)
- Prior tertiary studies
- Prior TAFE/VET studies
- Completed enabling programs
English Language Requirements
All applicants must demonstrate that they meet the University's English proficiency requirement. The overall minimum English language proficiency requirement is 7, with a sub-test minimum of 6.
Professional Accreditation
The LLB (Hons) is accredited by the Legal Profession Admission Board (LPAB) of New South Wales, providing students with all the academic study necessary to apply to practice as a lawyer in Australia, subject to completing an accredited practical legal training program.
Career-Ready Placements
Students will complete 140 hours of supervised placement, applying knowledge gained throughout their studies to acquire new skills and enhance their career readiness, while expanding their professional networks.
Program Requirements
The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) requires students to successfully complete 400 units, which is comprised of:
- 30 units Arts core courses
- 160 units of Laws (Honours) core courses
- 10 units from the Career-ready placement course list
- 80 units of Laws (Honours) courses chosen from the course list
- One 80 unit Arts major
- 40 units of electives OR a 40 unit Arts minor
