Course Overview

The MECH3400 - Materials Science and Engineering 2 course extends the competency of students in understanding the mechanics of engineering materials. The course focuses more on the mechanical behaviors of materials than Materials Science & Engineering 1, although the importance of other properties is never ignored.

Course Description

The course has three major elements:

  • The required theoretical understanding of the properties of engineering materials, how they are manipulated, and how they may degrade in service is presented in a series of lectures.
  • This material is reinforced by tutorials.
  • A series of laboratory exercises and a related assignment encourage students to think across topic boundaries.

Course Content

The course covers the following topics:

  • Mechanical properties of materials
  • Engineering Composites & Failure
  • Fracture Mechanisms
  • Fatigue failure & Design
  • Fatigue Crack Growth
  • Creep Mechanisms
  • Advanced materials & Manufacturing & Applications

Enrolment Requirements

Assumed Knowledge

  • MECH1750 Engineering Materials 1
  • MECH2430 Mechanics of Solids 1

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Relate the mechanical properties of a material to its atomic and crystal structure, and of the detailed assemblage of phases within it.
  2. Plan how material properties can be tailored to suit a particular application.
  3. Identify material failure related to fracture.
  4. Identify material failure related to fatigue and creep.
  5. Categorize different mechanical failure modes of materials.
  6. Connect advanced materials and advanced manufacturing with the mechanisms behind these phenomena.

Availability

The course is available in Semester 1.
