PhD Program
The PhD program focuses on an area of specialization relevant to the student's thesis research, plus completion of courses in microeconomic theory and economic research methods. The program requires the successful completion of a qualifying exam and the completion and defense of a research-based thesis in 12 semesters.
Admission Requirements
- A minimum of 73% (B) in the Master's program equivalent to the MSc in FARE. Most successful applicants have an average of 80%, A-, or higher.
- PhD applicants are required to write the General Graduate Record Examination (GRE-General only).
MSc Program
Students entering the M.Sc. program must have achieved a minimum 70% (B-) average or equivalent. Successful applicants tend to have a higher GPA, closer to 75% or Upper Second Class.
Admission Requirements for MSc Students
- Intermediate level micro- and macro-economic theory (ECON2310 and ECON2410 or equivalent)
- Advanced microeconomic theory course at the undergraduate level is strongly recommended as preparation for the course work in the MSc program
- Calculus and matrix algebra with applications to economics (ECON*2770 or equivalent)
- Intermediate level statistics (ECON*3740 or equivalent)
Language Requirements
- If the first language is not English, applicants must submit the results of a standardized language test.
- Acceptable tests and minimum required scores for FARE graduate programs are:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) = 7.0 overall score and a minimum score of 6.5 in the Speaking and Writing category
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- TOEFL - Paper based test (PBT) = 587
- TOEFL - Internet based test (IBT) = 95
- University of Guelph Language Certificate = Advanced Level

- Statement of Research: a one to two-page outline of research interest and why the applicant wishes to pursue graduate studies
- References: two academic references are required; a third professional reference is optional
- GRE (general section - PhD applicants only)
Application Deadlines
Applications to both programs are due February 1st of each year for the following September entry. International and domestic applicants are encouraged to complete their application by early January to ensure all documents are received by the deadline.
Research Areas
Faculty research areas include:
- Natural resources, particularly water and land, and the allocation of those resources
- Economics of animal welfare and consumer acceptance and willingness to pay for food products from agricultural production systems with enhanced animal welfare characteristics
- Effect of government policy or new technology on farmers' decisions and the impacts on the structure of agriculture
- Agribusiness firms' operation in the world of uncertainty, including food prices, business climate, and policy.
