Introduction to the Bachelor of Journalism Program

The Bachelor of Journalism (BJ) program at Carleton University is internationally renowned and has produced many of the top journalists in Canada and around the world. The program delivers journalism and storytelling skills that can be applied to a wide range of careers, both within and outside the news media.

Program Overview

Journalists play a crucial role in their communities and the country, serving as the eyes, ears, and voices for their audiences. They ask important questions, report on what they see and hear, and offer analysis of the changes and issues that shape society. To be effective, journalists must be well-educated, thoughtful, analytical, and equipped with a moral compass to guide their decisions.

Gain Practical Experience

The Bachelor of Journalism program is designed to provide students with high-calibre professional training and academic instruction. Students take courses outside of Journalism and can pursue a second major in another field. The program includes dynamic, hands-on workshops that focus on high-quality work delivered via text, audio, video, and various digital media. Students can also take specialized journalism courses in areas such as business, arts, politics, and health science.

Concentrations and Degrees

Carleton University offers a Bachelor of Journalism with a concentration in Health Sciences, in partnership with the Faculty of Science. Additionally, the university offers a Bachelor of Journalism and Humanities degree.

Capital Advantage

Studying journalism and storytelling in Ottawa, Canada's major media hub, provides students with unique opportunities. Many national media outlets have bases in the city, offering internships and career opportunities to students.

Distinguished Faculty

The professors and instructors in the Bachelor of Journalism program are among the finest journalists in Canada. The program also has an extensive network of working journalists who share their professional expertise with students as sessional instructors or guest lecturers.

Work Experience

Students in the Bachelor of Journalism program can gain hands-on experience in state-of-the-art digital newsrooms, broadcast studios, and seminar rooms. Professional apprenticeships allow students to put their skills to practical use, and summer internships and full-time jobs are available through media organizations that recruit Carleton students.

Global Journalism International Internship

The program offers a Global Journalism International Internship in partnership with Farm Radio International, providing students with the opportunity to participate in international journalism projects.
