Presentation

The course aims to explore the connection between the trans-historical phenomenon of human communication and contemporary mass societies, emphasizing the radical transformations caused by the socio-technical dimension of the digital. Particular attention will be dedicated to the forms of digital self-communication of social movements and migrations, and to the mass psycho-social effects generated by social media.

Objectives and Contents

Educational Objectives

The objective of the course is to analyze the language and content production of independent media, with particular attention to social networks and political movements. The course will focus on digital platforms, podcasts, and independent visual objects, reflecting on methodologies, languages, images, and sounds, and relating them to a sociological reading of cultural and communicative processes.

Detailed Educational Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The course proposes to establish a general theoretical framework for understanding mass communications in the digital age and to provide specific tools for critical analysis of the phenomenon. Students will develop the ability to observe the media reality revolutionized by digital communication, its effects of power and subjugation, its potential for positive transformation, and its reciprocal influence with broader social and political dynamics.

Didactic Modalities

The course is divided into two parts: a first, predominant part consisting of frontal lessons with essentially theoretical content aimed at providing students with interpretive tools to understand the phenomenon of mass communication in the digital age; and a second, laboratory part where, with extensive support of audiovisual materials, specific case studies will be analyzed and discussed.

During the second part of the course, students will be invited to realize, individually or in groups of up to two or three people, the presentation of the analysis of a case study previously agreed upon with the teacher. (The work done, optional, in case of a positive outcome, can be considered as part of the exam).

Program/Content

The course program focuses first on the relationship between society, communication, and media, dedicating particular attention to the digital as a new socio-technical factor determining today's media reality. Then, it will review the evolution of the main communication theories in light of the significant transformations of the media ecosystem caused by the internet and mobile phone revolution. Finally, to critically apply the proposed theoretical concepts and categories, it will examine: 1) forms of self-communication developed within contemporary social movements and migrations, 2) the psycho-social effects generated by social media on individuals and collectivity.
