Presentation
The course provides students with the knowledge and tools necessary to understand the main activities related to the choice of the most suitable hull and propeller for the needs of the case.
Objectives and Contents
Educational Objectives
The course aims to provide students with the fundamental principles and basic knowledge related to resistance to motion and propulsion of hulls.
Detailed Educational Objectives and Learning Outcomes
The course intends to provide students with the knowledge and methodological tools necessary to predict the resistance to motion of a hull, with reference to the influence of its geometric characteristics, as well as the knowledge and methodological tools necessary for the choice of the most efficient propeller for the hull.
Teaching Methods
The teacher will use:
- Frontal lessons for about 80% of the total hours
- Exercises in the classroom and at the Naval Basin to practically deepen theoretical aspects for about 20% of the total hours.
Program/Content
Main problems of fluid-hull interaction, recalls of hydrodynamics equations and homogeneity theorem, principle of similitude. Components of resistance to motion: tangential resistance, boundary layer, frictional resistance, flat plate resistance, hull surface, viscous pressure resistance, form resistance, induced resistance, wave resistance, wave field generated by a hull, absorbed energy, interference, bulb, resistance due to breaking waves, resistance of appendages, air resistance. Parameters that influence the resistance to motion. Model tests, presentation of results, systematic series of tests and statistical methods. Model tests, isolated propeller diagrams, cavitation, propulsion coefficients, self-propulsion tests, systematic series of propellers, propulsion problems, propeller design, performance prediction.

Exams
Exam Methods
The learning assessment method consists of an oral exam.
Exam Modalities
The exam aims to assess the student's ability to solve classic problems of Naval Architecture related to a recreational naval unit.
The exam consists of two open questions on topics covered in class and treated in the course notes.
From the examination of the answers, it is ascertained whether the student has acquired the notions and techniques illustrated in the course of the lessons and in the course notes.
The attribution of the vote will take into account:
- Knowledge of the topics covered
- Understanding of the related physical phenomena
- Expositional ability
- Problem-solving ability
