Program Overview
The MSc by Research Entomology is a unique research master's program in the UK, offering students the opportunity to gain expertise in the world of insects, from identification to insect-related issues facing society. This program is an excellent route into a career in entomology, with partnerships with several industry-leading organisations and professional individuals.
Course Structure
In this course, students will study insects and learn everything required to carry out scientific entomological study. The program develops broad expertise in entomology, as well as studying some areas in depth through research projects. The course carries a very large component of research work, providing students with expertise in different field and lab methodologies. Additionally, career development training is provided to maximise the use of new skills.

There is a significant need for entomologists in today's world, and our MSc by Research Entomology graduates have gone on to become:
- Private entomology consultants
- Entomologists at universities
- Teaching associates
- Agricultural entomologists overseas
- PhD students
Fees and Funding
MSc by Research Entomology students enrolling in 2025 will receive a fee reduction bursary of £1,000 from The School of Biological Sciences and the Royal Entomological Society. This bursary can only be used against fees. The normal alumnus discount will still be applied to fees for both programmes. Furthermore, a variety of funding support is available to all master's students, including:
- Government loans to help towards tuition fees and living costs for UK/EU students
- Other grants and bursaries
- Scholarships, which are awarded based on previous academic achievement, available to both UK/EU and international students
Learning Environment
Our master's courses are extremely practical, with hands-on learning out in the field, focused towards preparing students for their future career. Students will have the opportunity to learn from expert entomologists, zoologists, botanists, and ecologists, and access collections and samples on our biodiverse campus. The program also benefits from close links with industry, enhancing career prospects.
