BA Museum and Classical Studies
The BA Museum and Classical Studies degree is a unique joint honours course that combines the contemporary theory and practice of museum studies with the study of the classical world through literature, material culture, and history. This course is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in museum settings, including the University's own museums, and to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to become a museum professional.
Overview
This course is the only one of its kind in the UK, offering students the opportunity to study museum studies and classical studies in a single degree. The course is guided by the Department of Classics and provides students with the chance to gain experience in the University's museums, including the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology. Students will develop their knowledge and skills through a combination of problem-solving and enquiry-based learning techniques, taught by practising professionals in the field.
Structure
The course is structured over three years, with a range of compulsory and optional modules available to students. In the first year, students will take modules such as "Texts, Readers and Writers," "Greek History: War, Society and Change in the Archaic Age," and "The Past in the Present." In the second year, students will take modules such as "Museum Learning and Engagement" and "Presenting the Past: An Introduction to Museum Studies." In the final year, students will take a compulsory module in "Display Design, Planning and Creation: Project Module," where they will research, design, and install a museum exhibition using the University's collections.
