Introduction to the Bachelor of Education Program
The Bachelor of Education program is designed to provide students with the experiences and knowledge necessary to build a meaningful and fulfilling career in teaching and learning. The program includes three stream options, allowing students to focus their studies on the grade level of the children and youth they wish to teach.
Program Structure
The Bachelor of Education program is a two-year program that follows completion of a bachelor's degree. The program requires two years of full-time study to complete, although students may complete their degree on a part-time basis. Day-time attendance is required, and the practicum requires full-time attendance.
Stream Options
The program offers three stream options:
- Early Years, grades K-4
- Middle Years, grades 5-8
- Senior Years, grades 9-12
Study Areas
The Faculty of Education offers a wide variety of courses to help maximize students' experience. Study areas include:
- Indigenous knowledge and curriculum
- Inclusive education
- Cross-cultural education
- Media and digital studies
- Multilingual and multimodal literacies education
- Education for sustainable development
- Curriculum areas in sciences, arts, social studies, languages, math, human ecology (home economics), music education, and physical education
Practicum Options
The program offers a variety of practicum school experience options, including:
- Urban settings
- Rural settings
- French immersion settings
- Northern settings
- International settings
Unique Practicum Options
The Practicum and Partnerships Office provides a range of engaging opportunities for Bachelor of Education students in a variety of settings. Unique practicum options include:
- Indigenous Studies Option: This option provides students with an opportunity to delve into ways of incorporating Indigenous perspectives in Manitoba classrooms.
- First Nations/Home Community Practicum: This option allows students to complete a practicum in or near their First Nations or home community with support from Indigenous Faculty members.
- Northern Practicum: This option enables B.Ed students to experience teaching while living in a community in Manitoba's northern region.
- Special Focus Practicum Experiences: These experiences are organized yearly in response to student feedback, the interests of school divisions, and to support B.Ed students in exploring new Manitoba curriculum and education initiatives.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the Bachelor of Education program, students must have completed a bachelor's degree and meet the program's admission requirements. The Faculty of Education's Diversity Admissions Policy aims to ensure that graduates of the UM Bachelor of Education program help to create a more diverse teaching force in the province.

The Diversity Admissions Policy reflects this belief, aiming to admit up to 45% of the annual intake to reflect the cultural, ethnic, regional, and social diversity of Manitoba. Applicants belonging to the following groups are invited to apply:

Application Information
Online applications are available in November, and the deadline to apply is February 1. Students must complete their first degree and prerequisite courses by the end of the Winter Term in the year of their application.
