Medical Microbiology (MMIC) Program

The Medical Microbiology (MMIC) program offers a range of courses that provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the field. The program includes the following courses:

  • MMIC 6010: Biological Safety (3 cr)
    • Critical analysis of biological safety in research, diagnostic, and hospital environments
    • Assessment of underlying causes of laboratory-acquired infections and control measures
    • Analysis of bio-containment technologies, risk assessment tools, and scientific decision-making
  • MMIC 7012: Fundamental Virology (3 cr)
    • Introductory graduate-level course focusing on virus gene organization, expression, and replication mechanisms
    • Experimental design and advanced knowledge of viral replication and interaction with cellular machinery
  • MMIC 7040: Clinical Bacteriology (6 cr)
    • Scientific basis of routine laboratory methods for diagnosing bacterial infections
    • Specimen handling techniques and laboratory organization
  • MMIC 7050: Microbial Pathogenicity (6 cr)
    • Comparative structure of virulent and avirulent bacteria
    • Biochemical basis of virulence and host defenses
  • MMIC 7140: Clinical Parasitology (3 cr)
    • Epidemiology, molecular pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human diseases
    • Laboratory period for practical experience
  • MMIC 7160: Molecular Basis of Infection and Antibiotic Action (3 cr)
    • Historical development, mechanism of action, and principles of antimicrobial susceptibility testing
    • Molecular and genetic basis for antibiotic resistance transfer and pathogenesis of infectious diseases
  • MMIC 7170: Molecular Biology of Animal Viruses (3 cr)
    • Recent advances in molecular aspects of virus structure, replication, genetics, and virus-host cell interaction
  • MMIC 7190: Readings in Infectious Diseases (3 cr)
    • In-depth literature search on three aspects of a mutually agreed topic
    • Presentation of the "state of the science" and critical review
  • MMIC 7210: Clinical Virology (3 cr)
    • General virology, taxonomy, epidemiology, clinical aspects, laboratory diagnosis, treatment options, and prevention
    • Optional laboratory component
  • MMIC 7220: The Ecology of Infectious Diseases (6 cr)
    • Study of infectious diseases in a global context, including biomedical, clinical, health systems, and social determinants
    • Didactic, self-directed reading, and interactive small group sessions

Prerequisites and Requirements

  • A minimum grade of C is required for all courses, unless otherwise indicated.
  • Prerequisites for certain courses include MMIC 7010 or consent of the instructor.
