Certificate in Applied Counselling
The Certificate in Applied Counselling is a program designed to make a difference for others by studying counselling and developing personal counselling strategies.
Program Details
- Credential: Earn a University of Manitoba Certificate in Applied Counselling.
- Program Length: 2 to 5 years.
- Program Features: For Canadian citizens and permanent residents, part-time, classroom and online.
- Program Fees:
- General Stream: $5,143.95 for required courses, plus electives and $100 non-refundable application fee.
- Specialization in Addictions Studies: $5,815.95 for required courses, plus electives and $100 non-refundable application fee.

Study Counselling
This program is ideal for those who work or volunteer in a counselling context, as a professional or paraprofessional counsellor. For those without counselling experience, it is recommended to seek out volunteer opportunities prior to or while in the program.
Personal Suitability Criteria
The program focuses on the development of practical counselling strategies and is not intended to be therapeutic. Participants must have dealt with traumatic issues prior to entering the program and be willing to reflect critically on personal values and attitudes.
Integrating Indigenous Perspectives
The program integrates Indigenous perspectives and worldviews into several courses, recognizing the importance of inclusivity and respect for the First Peoples of Canada.

Admission Requirements
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent, or mature student status (21 years of age or older and missing high school entrance requirements).
- If primary language is not English, proof of English proficiency is required.
- Learners with 1 or more years of post-secondary education outside of the University of Manitoba must provide an official transcript.
Course Requirements
- Students must complete COUN 0100 first and their Capstone course last.
- All courses in the ACC program are screening courses, and students must adhere to the personal suitability criteria throughout the entire program.
- Students must obtain a minimum grade of C+ in each course and maintain 90 percent attendance to receive a passing grade.
Synchronous Sessions
At this time, almost all classes are being offered through live, online sessions, with some Saturday classes held in person at the Fort Garry campus. Class dates and times can be found on the course registration page.
