Introduction to the Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba offers a wide range of undergraduate degree programs, including the Bachelor of Arts General, Advanced, and Honours degrees. The faculty is committed to providing students with a well-rounded education in the humanities and social sciences, as well as preparing them for future careers.


Bachelor of Arts General Degree

The Bachelor of Arts General degree is a three-year degree program that requires students to complete a minimum of 90 credit hours of coursework. The program is designed to provide students with a broad-based education in the humanities and social sciences, as well as the opportunity to specialize in a particular subject area.


Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts General Degree

To graduate with a Bachelor of Arts General degree, students must complete the following requirements:


  • A minimum of 90 credit hours of coursework
  • A minimum of 30 credit hours in a Major subject area
  • A minimum of 18 credit hours in a Minor subject area
  • A minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework outside the Major and Minor subject areas
  • A minimum of 12 credit hours of coursework in any subject area
  • Completion of the University's Written English and Mathematics requirements
  • Completion of the Faculty of Arts' residency requirement

Bachelor of Arts Advanced Degree

The Bachelor of Arts Advanced degree is a four-year degree program that requires students to complete a minimum of 120 credit hours of coursework. The program is designed to provide students with a more specialized education in a particular subject area, as well as the opportunity to develop advanced research and critical thinking skills.


Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Advanced Degree

To graduate with a Bachelor of Arts Advanced degree, students must complete the following requirements:


  • A minimum of 120 credit hours of coursework
  • A minimum of 48 credit hours in a Major subject area
  • A minimum of 18 credit hours in a Minor subject area
  • A minimum of 42 credit hours of coursework outside the Major and Minor subject areas
  • A minimum of 12 credit hours of coursework in any subject area
  • Completion of the University's Written English and Mathematics requirements
  • Completion of the Faculty of Arts' residency requirement

Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree

The Bachelor of Arts Honours degree is a four-year degree program that requires students to complete a minimum of 120 credit hours of coursework. The program is designed to provide students with a highly specialized education in a particular subject area, as well as the opportunity to develop advanced research and critical thinking skills.


Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree

To graduate with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree, students must complete the following requirements:


  • A minimum of 120 credit hours of coursework
  • A minimum of 54 credit hours in an Honours subject area
  • A minimum of 18 credit hours in a Minor subject area (optional)
  • A minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework outside the Honours subject area
  • Completion of the University's Written English and Mathematics requirements
  • Completion of the Faculty of Arts' residency requirement

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the Faculty of Arts, students must meet the following requirements:


  • A minimum average of 70% in five full credits at the Grade 12 level
  • A minimum grade of 60% in each of the five full credits
  • Completion of the University's Written English and Mathematics requirements

Transfer Credits

The University of Manitoba accepts transfer credits from other recognized colleges and universities. Students who have completed coursework at another institution may be eligible to transfer credits to the University of Manitoba.


Residency Requirement

The Faculty of Arts has a residency requirement, which means that students must complete a minimum number of credit hours at the University of Manitoba in order to graduate. The residency requirement varies depending on the degree program.


Course Requirements

The Faculty of Arts offers a wide range of courses in the humanities and social sciences. Students must complete a minimum number of credit hours in their Major and Minor subject areas, as well as complete the University's Written English and Mathematics requirements.


Academic Regulations

Graduation

To graduate from the Faculty of Arts, students must complete all the requirements for their degree program and apply to graduate through the Aurora Student Information System. The University of Manitoba holds two convocation ceremonies per year, in May/June and October.
