Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedic Fellowship

The Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedic Fellowship program is designed for internationally trained dental specialists from non-accredited programs. The program offers the opportunity to review and enhance knowledge in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, creating a pathway to practice in Canada.


Fellowship Details

This Fellowship program, offered through Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), emphasizes clinical training, participation in seminars and didactic learning, a scholarly project, and teaching of undergraduate dental and dental hygiene students, and/or graduate dental orthodontic students.


Training

  • Attendance: Participants are required to attend on a full-time basis for a minimum duration of 12 months.
  • Successful completion of the program entails:
    • Passing the final year internal written and/or oral residency examinations.
    • Completing the assigned clinical cases to the clinical standard of practice expected of a graduating senior resident.

Certification and Recognition

Upon successfully completing the program, graduates will be awarded a certificate of completion from Post Graduate Medical Education (PGME), University of Manitoba. The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry will issue a letter of support and attestation of program completion to The Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC), which administers the National Dental Specialty Exam (NDSE).


Selection Process

Priority consideration will be given to internationally trained orthodontic specialists who can provide evidence of at least two years of clinical practice and active involvement in academia. Candidates expressing a desire to pursue a career in academic orthodontic dentistry in Canada will receive preference.


Mandatory Fees

  • Advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) certification: $500 (valid for 2 years)
  • Criminal records check: $200
  • Manitoba Dental Association (MDA) license: $1,350 (registration fee; renewal fee due by February 28)
  • PGME tuition: $1,180 (domestic), $4,599 (international)
  • University general fees: $1,250

Optional Fees

  • Estimated fee for instrument kit: $8,000 - $10,000 (based on the previous year's cost)
  • Parking: $1,450 (Health Sciences Centre)

Eligibility Requirements

Educational Background

To be eligible, applicants must:


  • Be a graduate of a general dentistry program.
  • Have completed a full-time, three-year orthodontics/dentofacial orthopedics specialty program.

English Proficiency

Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency by meeting one of the following criteria:


  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Achieve a minimum overall score of 100, with no section below 100.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: Achieve a minimum score of 7.0 in each section.
  • Pearson Test of English Academic: Achieve a minimum overall score of 61.
  • Exemption: If applicants have a secondary school diploma or university degree from Canada or a country on the Exemption List, they do not need to provide an English proficiency test score.

Citizenship Requirement

Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.


Application Submission

The application deadline for the intake cycle is closed. The program will not be accepting applications for the academic year.

  • Certificate/diploma (proof of completion for general dentistry degree and specialty training program)

  • English language proficiency results (if applicable)

Important Information

  • Fees: Applicants are responsible for all source verification fees, translation fees for certificates of professional conduct, and any registration and license fees.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Applicants must ensure all transcripts and reference letters are submitted no later than three weeks from their application submission date.
  • The department will not contact referees or academic institutions to request letters or transcripts on behalf of applicants.
