Entomology (MSc)

The University of Manitoba Master of Science (Entomology) provides exposure to diverse fields of entomology and related sciences with a focus on developing written and oral communication skills. Students will develop core competencies in research and thesis presentation, preparing them for entry to the workforce or PhD programs.

Research in the Department of Entomology is equally divided between basic and applied studies. Some areas of focus include:

• Honeybee parasite management
• Insects as agents of biological control
• Crop and livestock entomology
• Arthropod ectoparasites of mammals and birds

The University of Manitoba is home to the only Department of Entomology in Canada.

Wallis-Roughly Museum of Entomology

Entomology students have access to on-site research facilities including the Wallis-Roughley Museum of Entomology, which is home to the third largest research collection of insects in Canada.

Faculty Expertise

The Department of Entomology has faculty with expertise in areas including:

• Apiculture and pollination biology
• Physiological, population and community ecology of insects
• Insect systematics
• Insect-vertebrate interactions
• Aquatic entomology

Program Details

The Department of Entomology offers a two-year thesis-based Master of Science program.

Master of Science (Entomology)

• Expected duration: 2 years
• Tuition and fees: Program fees are assessed in the first two terms of study, followed by a continuing fee in the third and any subsequent terms.

Coursework

In addition to the minimum program requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, students must:

• Complete a minimum of six credit hours of coursework at the 7000 level or above.
• Complete ENTM 7150: Advanced Entomology 1, which is held in the winter term each academic year.

Students must demonstrate competence in completing thesis research and pass an oral examination relating to their thesis subject before obtaining an MSc degree.

Admission Requirements

The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the Master of Science (Entomology) program. Applicants normally require a four-year bachelor's degree in Agriculture or Science with a suitable selection of courses in insect biology.

Academically strong students without this preparation may be admitted into the program but may be expected to take additional courses ensuring they have a strong foundation of entomological knowledge.

Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

In addition to the admission requirements described here, all applicants must meet the minimum admission and English language proficiency requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Application Deadlines

The Master of Science in Entomology has three application deadlines per year.

• Canadian and US applicants:

• International applicants:
  • Fall (September): January 8
  • Winter (January): March 15
  • Summer (May): August 1
