Introduction to the Universiti Malaya Medical Programme

The Universiti Malaya Medical Programme (UMMP) is a five-year professional undergraduate medical degree offering clinical experience, research opportunities, and elective placements. Upon successful completion of the programme, students are conferred the Bachelor in Medicine and Bachelor in Surgery (MBBS) degree.


About the Programme

The UMMP provides current best practice in medical education, high teacher-student ratios, and extensive educational support. The graduate of this MBBS Programme will be a medical practitioner who is responsive to the health needs of individuals, families, and society at large. The programme is centred on nurturing fresh insights through innovative educational approaches that foster interdisciplinary discovery.


Programme Structure

The UMMP comprises four broad themes: Basic and Clinical Sciences, Patient and Doctor, Population Medicine, and Personal and Professional Development. In Stages 1 and 2, students work through a number of System Blocks that cover all body systems from both basic science and clinical perspectives. In Stages 3 of the programme, students cover all major aspects of clinical medicine.


Entry Requirements

  • Local applicants must meet specific requirements.
  • International applicants must also meet specific requirements.

Entrance Examinations and Interview

Applicants are required to sit for an entrance examination, which includes options such as MSAT (Malaysia), MCAT, or GAMSAT. Interviews are usually conducted in May for applicants who fulfill the entry requirements and are short-listed.


Admission Process

The admission process involves several steps, including applying online, sitting for the entrance examination, and attending an interview for short-listed candidates.


Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI)

The MMI is conducted for candidates who wish to apply for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Programme. The interview emphasizes a candidate's demonstration of preferred non-cognitive characteristics, such as giving instructions, receiving instructions, emotional communication, problem-solving, resilience and maturity, enthusiasm for medicine, ethics, and awareness of common issues in medicine.


Assessment Criteria for MMI

Candidates are awarded marks based on the following criteria:


  • Quality of content
  • Expression of opinion
  • Body Posture
  • Facial expression
  • Use of eye contact
  • Use of gestures
  • Language fluency

Programme Details

The programme is open to Malaysian and International applicants. The teaching hospital, University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), has more than 1000 beds and more than 1 million patients annually, providing students with ample opportunities to practise the art of Medicine in a safe and supervised environment.
