Graduate Diploma of Environmental Planning (S6L)

Overview

The Graduate Diploma of Environmental Planning is a one-year course that provides students with knowledge and skills in maintaining and building sustainable places. The course focuses on planning for diverse communities and future generations to flourish, with an emphasis on environmental and social issues.


Duration and Location

The course is available to study as both part-time or full-time, with a minimum duration of 1 year and a maximum of 3 years. It is offered in Hobart and online, with semester 1 and semester 2 intakes.


Entry Requirements

  • A Bachelor degree in any discipline or equivalent for domestic students.
  • Admission to most postgraduate coursework courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree for international students.
  • English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic) 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0).

Course Structure

The Graduate Diploma of Environmental Planning consists of 75 credit points of core units and 25 credit points of elective units.


Core Units

  • KGA511: Critical Planning: Theory, Processes and Applications
  • KGA512: Statutory Land Use Planning
  • KGA521: Urban Planning and Design

Elective Units

Choose one 25 credit point unit or two 12.5 credit point units from the following:


  • KGA517: Protected Area Planning and Management Systems
  • KGA532: Reserve System Planning
  • KGA581: Environmental Impact Assessment
  • KGG539: Fundamentals of Spatial Information

Learning Outcomes

  • Evaluate complex bodies of knowledge to support sustainable environmental planning decision-making.
  • Analyse environmental planning problems to create evidence-based solutions and strategies.
  • Apply communicative, procedural and technical skills to undertake the practice of environmental planning.

Practical Experience

Classroom work frequently involves collaboration with professional planning partners, including local government and the University's operations side. This not only broadens your professional network but also exposes you to the complexities and multidisciplinary nature of real-world challenges.


Professional Accreditation

The Graduate Diploma of Environmental Planning is not accredited, but is nested with the accredited Master of Planning (accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia).


Career Outcomes

After studying for the Graduate Diploma of Environmental Planning, you could work in statutory planning, assessing and submitting planning applications to guide land use and development. Alternatively, strategic planning would allow you to shape future policies, legislation, and community visions. In social planning, you'll identify community needs, assess social impacts, and design strategies to benefit local wellbeing.


Fees and Scholarships

Domestic Students

  • Commonwealth supported places (CSP) are available for this course.
  • Commonwealth Supported Place indicative annual fee: $9,312.
  • HECS-HELP loans are available for eligible students.

International Students

  • 2026 Total Tuition Fee: $39,450 AUD.
  • International students are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee, which is incorporated in the annual rate.

Articulation

The Graduate Diploma of Environmental Planning articulates to the Master of Planning (K7P).
