Introduction to the MSc Physiotherapy Programme at UCC

The MSc Physiotherapy programme at University College Cork (UCC) is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to become skilled, analytical practitioners in the field of physiotherapy. Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that aims to maximize the health and well-being of individuals of all ages, focusing on the assessment, treatment, and prevention of physical dysfunction.

Programme Overview

The programme explores the concepts, principles, and theories of current physiotherapy practice, incorporating movement analysis, therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, self-management, and health promotion, as well as the research evidence that underpins physiotherapy practice. Graduates from the MSc (pre-registration) physiotherapy programme at UCC will be able to integrate theory with current physiotherapy practice and demonstrate a high level of critical thinking.

Practice Placement

Practice placement is central to physiotherapy education at UCC. Students will undertake a minimum of 1000 hours of clinical placement during the course. Clinical placements take place in the hospitals and clinics of the HSE South/South West Hospital Group and other HSE hospital locations nationally, as well as in Community Health Organisations and other clinical facilities. It may also be necessary to undertake clinical placement in the UK. The physiotherapy programme at UCC prepares graduates to work as part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team in acute hospitals, primary and community care teams, rehabilitation centers, nursing and residential homes, hospices, occupational health settings, and private practice.

Graduate Outcomes

Graduates from the programme are skilled, analytical practitioners, capable of independent evaluative judgment. They contribute to the health and well-being of individuals and society. The physiotherapy programme at UCC is evidence-based and research-led, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to make a real impact on the quality of life of their patients.

Testimonials

Alumni of the programme have praised its comprehensive approach and the foundation it lays for a successful career in physiotherapy. For example, Brian Lane, Class of 2020, noted that the Masters in Physiotherapy at UCC is a fantastic programme that laid the foundation for the beginning of his professional life.

News and Events

The School of Clinical Therapies at UCC is actively involved in various events and initiatives that promote interprofessional learning and collaboration. For instance, an Interprofessional Learning workshop event, 'Understanding Dementia Together – a new collaborative multi-disciplinary approach,' was organized by Niamh Moore (Diagnostic Radiography) and Trish O'Sullivan (Physiotherapy) at Nano Nagle Place.
