Introduction to ICP Connect Globalisation and Development

The ICP Connect programme aims to deepen and broaden an international network of partners, offering a global Master program of Globalisation and Development. This includes a digital/blended pilot, built on joint academic capacity and shared research and societal outreach activities.

Programme Objectives

The programme draws upon the lessons learned and the pathways opened during highly innovative pilot experiences in Central America. The ICP Connect programme seeks to:

  • deepen and broaden an international network of partners
  • offer a global Master program of Globalisation and Development
  • include a digital/blended pilot
  • build on joint academic capacity and shared research and societal outreach activities

Activities

Within the framework of ICP Connect, several activities and joint programmes are developed, including:

  • Student mobility, with opportunities for research internships at partner universities
  • Staff mobility, with contributions in education and research at both IOB and partner universities
  • Curriculum support, with programme partners participating in the IOB dissertation benchmark exercise
  • Joint module on research methodologies, with an innovative field methodological course on research and co-creation of knowledge in/for development

Student Mobility

Student mobility is a key component of the programme, with two main opportunities:

  • Mobility window: research internship at partner university during the first module
  • Dissertation mobility: field work for dissertation with one of the partner universities or in other countries of the global South

Staff Mobility

Staff mobility is organized in both directions, from IOB to partners and from partners to IOB. This leads to contributions in education, such as guest lecturers, co-teaching modules, and involvement in benchmark or curriculum development.

Curriculum Support

Programme partners have participated in the IOB dissertation benchmark exercise, providing insights on the quality of dissertations and grading processes. Partner staff has been involved in various reflection and feedback meetings to improve IOB programmes.

Joint Module on Research Methodologies

A joint module on research methodologies has been co-designed and implemented, including:

  • An innovative field methodological course on research and co-creation of knowledge in/for development
  • An online course on research methods for development, with a focus on decolonial approaches

Blended Master in Globalisation and Development

A digital/blended 2-year GLOB Master will be co-designed and piloted, following the same structure as the current Master. The digital/blended pilot will be co-designed and co-implemented by a network built around Communities of Practice (CoPs).

Community of Practice on Political Ecology (PE) and Participatory Action Research (PAR)

The programme will consolidate two CoPs, on PE and PAR, around shared research and societal outreach activities. These CoPs will inform the design and implementation of the GLOB Master and its digital/blended version.

ICP Connect GLOB Team

The ICP Connect GLOB team includes:

  • Prof. Dr. Gert Van Hecken (North Promotor)
  • Dr. Pierre Merlet (Coordinator for the design of the Blended Master in Globalisation and Development Pilot)
  • Marjan Vermeiren (North administrative coordinator)
  • Partner institutions, including Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar (Ecuador), Centro de alternativas al desarrollo (Colombia), and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Colombia)
