Program Overview
The Micro-credential: Pati螚tenrechten is a postgraduate program offered by the University of Antwerp, focusing on patients' rights in healthcare. The program is organized every two years, starting in even academic years.

Course Content
The Medical Confidentiality and Patient File
This part of the course extensively covers:
- Different types of legally regulated patient files, their content, and form
- Rights and duties of healthcare professionals and patients regarding patient files
- Patient files outside the doctor-patient relationship
Specific Patient Rights
Topics include:
- The right to healthcare as a Belgian constitutional right
- The right to free choice of healthcare provider
- The right to health information and informed consent
- Complaints procedure
Minor Patients and Protection Statutes for Incapacitated Persons
This section covers:
- The position of minors according to the Patient Rights Act
- Specific regulations, such as forced hospitalization of mentally ill patients
- General representation rules in the Patient Rights Act for adults who cannot exercise their rights independently
Learning Objectives
The program aims to provide insight into:
- The broad regulatory framework regarding medical confidentiality and patient files
- Practical application problems related to medical confidentiality and patient files
- The regulatory and social framework regarding the right to healthcare, free choice of healthcare provider, health information, informed consent, and complaints procedure
- The regulatory framework regarding the rights of minors and protection statutes for incapacitated persons
- Critical analysis and interpretation of relevant legislation and regulatory areas

Lecturers
The program is coordinated by Christophe Lemmens, with guest lecturers contributing to the richness of the program. The academic quality is ensured by the University of Antwerp's quality system, under the supervision of the program coordinator Evelien Delbeke and the academically responsible Thierry Vansweevelt.
Attendance, Evaluation, and Certificate
- Attendance: A minimum attendance of 50% is required to obtain the certificate
- Evaluation: Participants can choose between writing a paper or taking an oral exam
- Certificate: Awarded upon sufficient attendance and successful completion of the evaluation
Additional Study Activities
The AHLEC chair organizes additional study activities, which may be mandatory for micro-credential students as part of their program. Participation is free, but prior registration is necessary.
